I am going into the 10th grade this year, and I'm wondering what I would have to do in order to graduate early, and what the pros and cons would be.

It still may be possible to graduate early... normally that decision is made when you are entering high school; however, you will need the support of your parents and school administration to begin in most cases. Your school counselor who helps you with scheduling is the key person to let you know what is required to graduate early. He or she can devise a program for you, but be advised it may require a schedule without study halls, classes before or after regular school hours, and/or summer school classes. Some pros: You will enter the work force one year earlier and thus gain that additional year of salary; you will be able to enter college; you will have completed your high school education. Some cons: You may not be able to attend dances or social events that you would normally attend your senior year (if this is important to you, better ask the school administration now and perhaps get it in writing); you leave your friends behind; you will have one year less to mature than others when you attend college.

I did it, and loved it! The ONLY con was not being in my parent's home that extra year, because we were really close and had a great relationship, but that was nothing compared to the greatness of getting an earlier start on college and all that came after. I was just bored in school and most of my friends were a year ahead of me anyway.

So, down to the nitty-gritty... The biggest obstacle was the four years of required English. But my high school accepted Speech for one of the years, so I took that in conjunction with 9th grade English and skipped 10th grade English altogether. I took zero periods and 7th periods as well as summer school (at local community college) to make up other credits, and oiu-la! I was out of there in three years flat. No problem at all.

Bottom line: talk to your counselor at school. I had the plan down after my first semester, freshman year, so you're a little behind and may need to take extra units during the summer or something. But your counselor should help you work it out! Good luck!

Sometimes you can take extra classes during the summer, you might miss your friends and spending your senior year with them, but on the pro side you can get out of school earlier

Talk to your guidance counselor. A little extra effort & you could do it.
