If he's not in any pain and he has no urinary problems, I say let him drink. He's not actually gaining weight, since he will expel the extra fluids through perspiration and urination. He'll be flushing the toxins out of his body.
*Edit*
If he's not increasing his trips to the restroom and his activity level isn't matching his water intake, then you should probably slow him down on the drinking and see a doctor. People have mentioned Diabetes, but he could also have a problem with his kidneys or with his urinary tract. Your family doctor can do a sugar count in his office, and if it's not Diabetes he can give you a referral to a Urologist.

I would say no. There's such a thing as water intoxication from drinking too much water. I don't know if you get the same buzz as drinking alcohol, but you get slurred speech, uncordinated moves, etc. And like alcohol, if you drink too much, you can go into a coma or die. I've seen mental illness patients do this in an attempt to flush anti-psychotic drugs out of their system. Beware!

Is it that he is extremely thirsty and keeps drinking and drinking to quench his thirst, only it doesn't? This can be a sign of diabetes. In that case he needs be taken to see his primary care doctor. Drinking water isn't going to cause him to gain weight. Water has zero calories. Weight gain is going to be from eating to much, or eating the wrong foods.

Just because his belly gets bigger does not mean he's gaining weight. What are you, retarded? Water has no calories at all and will never cause weight gain.

At that point he would need to pee. But yes there is such a thing
as too much water. Drinking too much water depletes a person
of vitamins and minerals.

DO NOT ALLOW YOUR CHILD THE RIGHT TO DRINK A GLASS OF WATER BUT YOU ARE THE PARENT-SET SOME LIMITS!! IF THE KID JUST DRANK A GALLON OF WATER THEN I WOULD SAFELY SAY THAT HE/SHE IS NO LONGER THIRSTY!! DON'T DEHYDRATE THEM BUT YOU ARE THE PARENT YOU SHOULD KNOW WHEN ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.
