because you are either native to a land or alien to a land. They are not native: therefore they are aliens. Has nothing to do with outerspace. Do you realize that if you go back far enough everyone is an alien to North America, even the Indians, they came from Siberia.

Personally-I don't like the name. I know it is used by many and in knowledge books as the proper word.
