I am a new user of Yahoo! Answers. I just posted my first question today, and in a matter of minutes was overwhelmed with answers. Sara, Samantha, Alwin... I want to thank each one of you for your lovely answers.
At the same time, another question arose.
Evil and violence manifests itself in the ways we see around us: war, crime, cheating, etc.
Why do we not see / hear of goodness showing itself? A smile to a stranger, a few kind words, patient listening to the distressed, some timely help to the needy...
What we could do is limited only by our imaginations. One good deed could trigger another, and soon we might be flooded with enthusiasm.
(This is not my wishful thinking and actually might be possible. "One good deed deserves another", is not my line.)

Can't such positive acts counter the prevalent gloomy atmosphere spread by violence and acts of terror?

Looking forward to your thoughts.

Actually it can be done and often is. We don't hear about these things because the news is so full of bad things happening. Our local news here tries to put one good thing on the news a day. There is also a commercial that shows how people do good things and the person who saw the good deed does something good for someone else and keeps going full circle. I wish this kind of thing would spread more and people would listen to it. Just like one angry thing can cause anger in other people, kind things can spread too.

You have a nice question. I too always got the same doubt. You see, nowadays good people aren't everywhere. So there are few people here are there who actually care for others and do good deeds, so it will take time to spread to others. So we have to wait patiently for the time to come. Now the world is like in the eye of the hurricane. After a few years, the eye will pass away and peace will be restored.

If you believe in Hinduism, ave you heard tat at the end of Kalyug, the world will come to an end. Actually, the world will not come to an end but only the good people will remain and all the bad people will die. And the process of reproducing and stuff will start all over again. ( This was actually said by some sages and saints.)

As much as I hate to say this there won't be much goodness when theres so little respect for other peoples beliefs and not to mention theres so few people saying this is what people want to watch, see, hear, and buy. and the sad things is we let them tell us these things buy making them the money that they want to make. Look at the left behind III movie did you see it in any theaters no because the theaters didn't think it would make the money. and yet you look at the number of attendees would have matched or beaten some of the top movies and this movie was shown in churches. I think people are wanting things better just untill you get them all screaming they want change noone will take notice..........

We're living in the end of this age when Satan is attempting to orchestrate his agenda as spelled out in Isa 14:13 and Rev 6.

This is a time of extreme wickedness. Jesus warned about these days when he said: "And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold." Matt 24:12 KJV

If you can walk in the love of Christ in this time of apostacy you're an exceptional individual.

I know I can't.

Apparently in St. Louis, Missouri, one of the news channels agrees with you. They have started a series of stories about the goodness of people in the area after receiving letters from people tired of hearing about how crummy everything is.
Maybe we don't hear about goodness, but do we ever just receive it? I try to make it a point to say please and thank you to everyone and just brighten someone's day when I can. Hopefully they pass it on to someone else and the cycle continues.

Bad news sells better than heartwarming stories of goodwill. With bad news all feel that they may be affected while good news only effects the people in the story.
Therefore editors will 'bump' the 'soft' story for the 'hard' story.

If you want the world to change, I believe you have to start with yourself. I think you have to do what you wish others would do, and it causes a ripple effect. We may not be able to change a whole big world, but we can do something in our little corner. And that may spread to another little corner. And so on.

I agree but unfortunately in this world : Sex, violence, hatred and other unpleasant things sell and provide much that people consider etertainment. These wonderful things seem to bore people and are not considered "News Worthy."

u reminded me of a question that my prof asked , " what will i get in return for this? " ( pointing to photocopies of notes 4 those who can't afford to buy books) , my answer to prof was - " a kind act does not require any returns, for its sweetness will pass on to others in time"....
