First, for the Ford guy who thinks "Camaro" means "friend" in Italian, not even close. "Camaro" means "Camaro", imagine that! It sounds close to the word "comrade", but that translates to "camerata". Ok, foreign language lesson over.
Second, it depends on what package of Mustang or Camaro you're talking about. Put a Yenko Camaro against a bread & butter Mustang 302 & the Camaro will smoke it.
Both 60s & early 70s cars had nice styling. Of course it was the Muscle Car era, so power meant everything. Ford hit a homerun with the new retro-design Mustang, & the concept Camaro is along those same lines.
In any case, it'll be interesting when the new Challenger comes off the line in '08 & Chevy starts putting out the Camaro again. The Pony Car wars will start all over. You'll get performance PLUS some decent gas mileage. Yee haw!

Mustang is an all around car while the camaro is just balls to the wall power and speed and lacks in a lot of other categories. I've driven an 02 ss camaro and it was fast but it didn't brake well, looking through the windshield was like staring through a distorted bubble, the seat was way too low, it didn't handle for crap. On the other hand, I have a 2005 mustang gt with great seating position, respectable get up and go power, stops on a dime and handles exceptionally well for a car its size and weight. I'd have to go with Mustang on this one for two reasons: It's a more all rounder kind of car while the camaro lacks other aspects important in a car and the fact that ford has been producing them for 40+ years should tell you they must be doing something right. Oh, and don't use the excuse that the camaro is coming back, the point is chevy can't do anything right and that's why they couldn't sell enough of the last gen camaro. Goes to show that people aren't interested in just power, seeing as how Ford sells WAY MORE mustangs than chevy ever did camaros, and now the GTO is gone the way of the camaro...too bad...400 hp is a nice thing, too bad it looked like a cavalier and grand prix had bad drunken sex and produced an ugly baby

From 1993-2002 the Camaro owned the Mustang with their LT1 and LS1 engines. The lil' ol Ford 4.6 didn't have the balls to hang with a 5.7L bow tie. No new Camaro out as of yet, but i'd suspect a 2002 SS would give a 2006 Mustang GT a good a$$ whoopin still.

The dude above doesn't know what the hell he's talkin' about- the Shelby GT500 can't even beat a base 2006 Corvette. And the GT 500 is not a 4.6L, it's a 5.4L with an Eaton supercharger- and it lost to a 6.0L n/a engine with 80 less hp. Facts are facts pal.

Depends what years of Mustangs and Camaros you are buying. If it is current model year vehicles, The Camaro will be introduced again in 2008, it will directly compete with the Mustang and the new 2008 2 door Dodge Challenger. The Camaro will have more power under the hood with the Vette's 5.7 litre, the Stangs have 300 horses in the GT trim. Until you go to the Mach or the Cobra, the Camaro will beat it light to light.
BUT, if you are taking about 1986 to 1993 Mustangs, they will absolutley destroy and Camaro on the road. The 86-93 Fox body Stangs were no joke and would easily stay with the modern versions with little tweaking. But, if you like Mopar, The Dodge Challenger will mop the floor with both utilizing 425 horses out of a 6.1 litre HEMI. You really cannot make a bad choice, each has its strong points, it al comes down to prefrence.

They both are about the same, the only thing with the Mustang is that they have a bigger name then the Camaro. Camaros were never really as popular as the Mustang.

The mustang has a better gear to torque ratio, so it has more initial get up and go. But the Camro has tighter steering. Although the mustang will take it off the line the Camaro will win in the long run. Also, the mustangs of later years are not built so well. The commonly have drive shaft, paint and clutch problems.

I am sick and tired of all this crap. If people are going to argue over which is better, here is what you do: take the Mustang and a camaro (the base models!, not 2 different classes of the cars!)
and put them on a road coarse and on the 1/4. If you want to come to White, GA, to see which is better, bring it! Now if you chevy crack heads want try a Mustang. And I have grown up around both cars, so I know what they both can do. Try me : 460 ported, polished and bored (and there are some other things in my engine, but I don't want to too big word to confuse the wanna be pony car boys). Twin Demon 650's. Tremec 6 speed (Pro 5.0 shifter). Gears = 4:56. Fully adjustable air bag suspension. I wont even take my system out in the 400m. Try me.

Mustang. Seating position is more comfortable, looks are better, easier to work on, better bang for the buck. Also because when the Camaro was being made, the Mustang out sold it by two to one. Gotta go with the numbers.

Mercury Marauder, get the zip of the two door sport car in a sedan (:

Just joking, I am not sure what you would consider better between the cars but speaking for a simple v6 2004 mustang, I have noticed ford lacking in quality control in some cars. My mustang for example had a small leak ( I mean real small, just enough to dampen the seatbelt) in the back window. I will say this about the mustang, it is a nice sports car that will get you noticed no matter how many are around. It is a cool car that can get you rolling out with speed and a chick magnet at that.
