get a recording of the next episode, obviously making sure she doesnt' know. Keep a little tape recorder by the door. Take it to the police.

Sometimes it just doesn't pay to get between a mother and her child. If you are a mandatory reporter (school teacher, playground instructor, daycare worker, etc.) then you would have to tell the police. Otherwise, keep a lookout for obvious physical signs of abuse (or admissions by the child himself) before taking any action.
It is a thing to, perhaps, tell a village constable, but in a way that acknowledges some uncertainty about your role in the situation. An inquiry at the desk that begins with "I really don't know if this is at all appropriate, and I understand if I am out of line, but I have this neighbor..." That will frame the situation for the officers or child welfare person, in the appropriate way. You certainly don't want to complain loudly, or you WILL seem like the crank who started the thing.
I hope that helps.

Hmm I can't say I never say things like that to mine, cos he can be a real unruly little bastard sometimes. But shouting threats through your mailbox is a bit OTT. Having said that, pikeys always react like that to outsiders 'cos they're afraid their main source of income will be taken away by social services!
I had a confrontation with neighbours over their kids when we first moved in here, and one woman would spit at my kitchen window when I wasn't there, or throw rubbish at my door after we'd gone to bed. So: advice from experience.
Do you know if she is in rented? You should contact her landlord direct. They often offer mediation services, you should say yes to this in case it works and also it will look good on you if she refuses. Then she will get a warning and if she carries on she may get an asbo.
If perchance she owns her home, she can still be banned from it for up to 3 months, although in this case you have to go to the police and the council, and do your best to collect evidence of her behaviour in the meantime.
Whatever you do, try not to get involved in direct confrontation. It's messy and later difficult to prove the other person provoked you. For more advice and general sympathy, google for "neighbours from hell" which is a messageboard for people who have 'em.
Good luck..

This woman is mentally abusing her child and communicating threats which sometimes escalates to physical abuse. This situation should immediately be brought to the attention of child welfare services. Oftentimes people fear to get involved for personal reasons which can be detrimental to the child. Please do not hesitate to report this to the appropriate agency. As to her shouting threats through your letterbox file an harassment suit against her and do not fail to mention this fact when reporting her abuse of her child, this further proves the instability of this woman.

My advice is to ignore her because she might retaliate later on if you get involved. However, if the situation appears to be getting out of hand call the police ASAP.
I edited my previous post as reading it again I thought it might have caused offence to Scottish folk. And that was not my intention at all and so to set the record straight, you do not have to be Scottish to be abusive to children. It happens all over the UK and is a sad indictment of our society that we have not moved on from the 1900's in respect of the way some children are treated; i.e.no respect and cruelty towards them.

Don't bother with the police, the people who've replied with that answer aren't living in the real world, there's worse things to deal with than bad language. If she shouts through your letterbox again, have a bottle of fairy liquid handy and squirt it in her mouth.

Ring the police. If you have any suspicions about the child being mis-treated, call social services. Too many children suffer when society turns a blind eye. this woman sounds vile and needs to know the meaning of humanity

I would totally ignore her - she's clearly out of control . Call the police straight away and go sit in a room away from your front door.
