Bacteria in your gut help to break down the food you have eaten. It is the gas released by the bacteria which make farts smell. Everyone's digestive system is different which explains why some people's farts smell worse than others even when they have eaten the same food.

One word: Sulfide (Sulfer)
Composition of flatus gases
Nitrogen is the primary gas released. Methane and hydrogen, lesser components, are flammable, and so flatulence is susceptible to catching fire. Not all humans produce flatus that contains methane. For example, in one study of the feces of nine adults, only five of the samples contained bacteria capable of producing methane[5]. Similar results are found in samples of gas obtained from within the rectum. The gas released during a flatus event frequently has a foul odor which mainly results from low molecular weight fatty acids such as butyric acid (rancid butter smell) and reduced sulfur compounds such as hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg smell) and carbonyl sulfide that are the result of protein breakdown. The incidence of odoriferous compounds in flatus increases from herbivores, such as cattle, to omnivores to carnivorous species, such as cats. Flatulence odor can also occur when there is a number of bacteria and/or feces in the anus while being expelled. A small amount of solid or liquid fecal matter in fine particulate aerosol form may also be expelled, and included, along with flatulence.
The scent you smell is sulfide, not methane. If we were talking about cows, then yes, methane would be the correct answer. When talking about humans, the answer is sulfide. A very low concentration of methane produced by humans.

The odor of farts comes from small amounts of Hydrogen sulfide gas and mercaptans in the mixture. These compounds contain sulfur. Nitrogen-rich compounds such as skatole and indole also add to the stench of farts. The more sulfur rich your diet, the more your farts will stink. Food such as cauliflower, eggs, and meat are notorious for producing smelly farts, whereas beans produce large amounts of particularly non stinky farts

You have received plenty of answers concerning this question, so I am going to give you one that you haven't received yet.
The silent farts are really the ones that smell because they go through the poop and the loud ones don't stink because they jump over the poop.

because of what we eat. If we eat vegetables: we get a not so stinky fart. If we eat meat and cakes: we get silent but deadly fart.
There are chemicals in the food we eat that becomes toxic waste in our body and it becomes gas that we fart out.

Because of the aging process my man, that food has to assimilate and break down, it takes a while to work itself out. so it picks up some vapors along the way but hey, without the vapor trail, you got to work so much harder, you dig? Sheila you sly dog lol
