Just a question I was wondering about. Do people running for election as an MP or local councillors have to declare a criminal record if they stand, are the public allowed to know if they have one (even if its a conviction for cannabis in 1970 or something) or are they excluded if they have one? I'm thinking mainly in terms of parties such as the BNP or maybe even Sinn Fein, Respect candidates and so forth , but also from major parties too.

think you are the present government, who controls the pay and the lives of the police rigidity. If those with criminal records (which includes Nelson Mandella to illustrate) weren't allowed to stand for election then it may be incredibly worry-free to do away with any opposition with the aid of persecution. of direction, you are able to hold them in penal complex for 28 days with out charge. this is criminal, and no repayment is ever paid for the lack of ability of earnings and corresponding harm that the government has finished to someone's acceptance. How could you be responsive to if somebody had a criminal checklist? There in lies the undertaking. If the government have administration over who can stand for election, then there is not any democracy. this is improper and hypocritical!

Now for a sensible answer at last: If you've got a criminal record, you can't stand as an MP - and they're well vetted before being allowed to proceed. (No doubt someone Will try to contradict me, but who cares!)

My uncle was in Borstal as a young man and always in and out of trouble, he became a local MP in his forties and did a great job for the troubled community he lives in. He was even Mayor for a year, but dont ask me if he declared his troubled past, its never been mentioned in the papers.

Dont mean to contradict you eflatsharp, but its true....x.
