I know it looks a little strange since you are only used to seeing this type of activity at events such as a Led Zeppelin concert or the World Cup, but there are people who actually get excited about God. If you are going to get excited about something, I see no better thing that your salvation. Until you experience someone who loves you and wants you to have an incredible life, I know it is hard to understand.
I also read all the comments on the atheist's site (cool site by the way) and there are answers and valid responses to all of his questions/statements. In fact, you can much more easily prove that Jesus Christ was alive and that He is who He says He is versus trying to prove that Aristotle or Socrates was alive and said what they said. There is so much manuscript evidence and historical, archeological, and scientific evidence, that it is almost hard to believe anything else. The only thing I can see people questioning is the resurrection. There is only eye-witness tesimony for that. Of course, eye witness testimony weighs pretty heavily in court nowadays.
Anyway, I would suggest readying: 'The Case for Christ,' written by a former atheist/Washington Post editor. Also read 'The Privileged Planet,' and also read about something that Michael Beehee (sp?) discovered in the human body. It has actually changed the minds of thousands of top scientists that there is a creator. Too me, it takes too much faith to be an atheist. Am I supposed to think I was created from dirt or mold or what? Am I supposed to believe that the earth just exploded into being and may explode again and life will form again and then again and again. What a great coincidence if so. It would be so great if it were all random chance, if nothing mattered, if there were no consequences for my actions. Now that sounds like a crutch to me. I always wonder why people wouldn't rather think that they were created for a purpose.

I'm not quite sure what you're asking. Are you asking why there are televised services, or are you asking another question.
Televised services are especially good when you are housebound, ill, or are not physically capable to get to your home church. When my mother had Alzheimer's and colon cancer, she had visits from those from her church, but she was not able to go to services at the church house. So, the televised services gave her much comfort and the opportunity to "be fed" in the Word of God by a Pastor, a teacher, a shepherd.

Let me ask you this then. What about the invalid or the terminally ill person in a hospital or hospice who cannot get out to church and fellowship? Are they to miss service and being fed? People like D James Kennedy and Charles Stanley and other legitimate church pastors deliver solid messages and your statement is not completely fair.

I don't know, it's ridiculous. any church I've been to, I've never seen the congregation do any of that stuff. They're probably just doing it because they know there's cameras on them, that's all I can guess. it's funny though, watching them act so silly LOL. What really cracks me up is those preachers who act like they can use God's power to heal people, so they touch them, then they act like they've passed out. I think people get carried away on those programs.

They are probably all asleep. I watched less than five minutes of a televised church sermon and it was so darn boring. Then all of the sudden people started reaching up their arms and I attribute that to stiffness in your arms while your sleeping so they need a good stretch.

Different churches have different views on this. In some churches this is quite common, in others its rare, and in others its unheard of. It is just a sign of worship and surrender.

they aren't reaching for a light switch.
they are surrendering to god, his holy spirit.
they are worshipping the almighty god.
they are allowing god & the holy spirit to touch them in a spiritual way. they are meditating on the song's that are being sung. they are allowing god to take all their burdens, hurts, frustrations , cares of this world to be handed over to god to take care of them.
they are getting ahold of the mind of god.
allowing gods holy spirit to comfort them, god's peace touching them,
it's an awesome thing to do & feel.
that's why their eyes are closed b/cuz they are in tune with god.

Christian lift their hands in a show of surrender to God. It's as if we are reaching to touch Him and get closer to Him, which we are. It also show the world that we are unashamed to show that we want more of God and His presence.

LOL! They're looking for their lost intellect. Church isn't the place to find that.
