deductive reasoning

The type of reasoning depends on the data one is drawing conclusions from. The reasoning could be scientific if the data were also scientific. The type of thinking also depends upon the conclusions drawn. If for example the facts given state that the world is round and so is the moon and the conclusion drawn is that the moon is made of cheese then the thinking is illogical.

Deductive reasoning goes from general knowledge to specific facts;
Inductive reasoning goes from particular facts to general conclusions.
BTW, a valuable resource when dictionaries aren't enough is a good Thesaurus. They don't define words but give lists of synonyms (words that are similar in meaning) and antonyms (words that are opposite in meaning). You can often find the word you want by looking at similar words (for example: reasoning). They are cheap and available at most bookstores and should be on every student's bookshelf.
