That's a good question. I suppose it's because a lot of guys are very insecure and think that they can make themselves look better and more in control when their mates are around.
If your man is doing that, say something to him and say that it upsets you.

A lot of people just need comparison to feel good about themselves. Whenever you see that it should tell you that they ain't all that. If your guy acts like that give him a payback without letting him know straight up what's hitting him and why. When he asks, explain, stick to your point and try to have that matter settled once and for all. Should he act up again, don't hesitate to pay him back.
And personally I'm always sorta mean to girls, but I mean well as you may notice. So it doesn't mean all that really as long as it doesn't become excessive. So from that angle toughen up or rough up a guy verbally when you're with a bunch of other girls. It does have something to do with how we play out differences among ourselves, no more no less.

From what I have noticed of guys, when they are around their buds, they "show off". They for whatever wierd reason seem to think that their friends seeing them act nice to their girl makes them appear to be not in control of their girl. So they act all tough and manly man and (insert grunt here) me man you woman know your role. The good part is, when boys become real men....ie when they finally grow up....most guys realize how dumb they appear and stop this. To me this has always been a good indication of a male having "grown up" lol.

This is to help their mates feel more secure, it is not the the ladies are insecure, but it is more like we are insecure about your insecurities. He acts mean to show his woman that she recieves the best treatment from him and she doesn't have to worry about him going to be with some other girl, it is just a crazy game, but nothing to be offended over, before i got enough sense to just tel my woman that, i did the same foolishness. it wasn't that smart because even though i felt i had my woman's troust, i had a lot of explaining to do to some friends.

Posturing. Some men have the need to show that they have the "upper hand" when they're around the guys, and then show their women the consideration they deserve when their male friends leave to make up for acting like jackasses.

some guys feel they have to put up a front when their guy pals are around. If not then they will never hear the end of it. Real men know that they don't have to do this and will treat their women right no matter who's around.

because when their friends are around they have to act tuff and can't show their gentle side but when ur alone with them then they can be gentle enough to kiss a girl. But when their friends are around it's 'back off girly' unless u r super popular in the city then they will show-off

all guys tend to show to thier mates they hate this girl,cuz if he showed them that he loves the girl,a kind of race will begine between his mates to win her,so when a guy loves a girl,
he avoid this kind of races by the way u mentioned.

guys dont like showing their true feelings for a girl in front of thier mates, something to do with their tough guy appearance i expect.

men have issues showing their squishy side...they want their guy friends to know who the man in the relationship is, and that they are manly and dont have emotions or something. I think its dumb personally.
If your guy is doing this and it bugs you, talk to him about it. If he is being really mean he may not be worth hanging around with.
