I am traveling from Maine to Virginia via 1-95. Plan to spend most of the day Wednesday in Manhatten with my 14 year old son. I need a place to park and catch a train, bus or subway into Manhatten.

The best place to park is in Jersey City NJ if you take 95 North right past newark airport and get off 78 east and follow signs to holland tunnel. As you approach the holland tunnel stay over to your right and turn right onto marin blvd its the last turn before entering the holland tunnel and go up about a half mile you'll see a big parking lot to park for10 bucks the entire day. The parking lot will be on your left and from there your about a three block walk to the path train station wich is called grove street. take the train going to 34th street its about a 25 minute ride for $1.50. You'll be in the heart of the city when you get off. Have fun! By the way all the other suggestions here like trenton, menlo park and newark are more costly and will take you hours by train. I would try and time the rush hour in the morning by the holland tunnel. I travel over there daily and would say aviod arriving near the holland tunnel between 8am and 9am anytime before and after you'll be ok with traffic.

Park your car at the Port Authority Bus terminal. It's just outside the Holland Tunnel.

You can catch a train in Trenton and ride to the Big Apple. I was there in 2000 and was able to do some site-seeing at night from the roof of one of the Twin Towers before they fell a year later.

I like the idea of driving into the city and parking accross from the pt authority bus station. think of all the time you will spend going back and forth ((which may sound short but in reality will take hours). Make your staty in NYC more enjoyable that way

Newark and take NJ transit or the PATH over.

Hoboken you can take the PATH over.

Those are the closest for the shortest trip.
