You mean like the last 14 times it's happened? Airlines, for the most part, don't lose bags. But they sure "delay" a lot of them!

That's why I keep a pair of underwear and socks and toothbrush with me. Any maps or business reports I must have. The bare minimum for the next 24 hours.

Queue up at the baggage office in the baggage claim area. Try to get there first, because if one bag is missing, many often are.

Present your claim check and be ready to describe the bag and some of its more notable contents.

They'll file a claim and give a reciept and send you on your way. Often it comes in on the next flight from your departure city. They will courier to your hotel or home. Have an address to give them.

If you're away from home AND it is delayed 24 hours, you might get $25 or so out of them for toiletries and fresh undies. Plus more if it has been a few days. Save your reciepts. If you don't ask, they won't volunteer. Try to get that pre-approved. A few things, like child car seats, they have loaned me or approved rental of (since they're required by law).

Longest delay (out of 650,000 miles flown)? 35 days from Slovakia to Alaska. 90% are between 3 and 24 hours. A few have taken 2 or 3 days.

Edited to add: They can ship it to where ever your travels take you. Including to another country on another airline. They delayed it, they have to get it to you. KEEP THAT TRACKING NUMBER. And advise them if the ship-to address needs to be updated.

I've lost luggage before. What you do is take your baggage claim number to the customer service representative for the airline you used at the baggage area and tell them that your baggage is lost. They'll track the luggage (and usually it was just put on the wrong plane) and they'll send it to you from the location it ended up at. Generally the shipping is free. If you aren't at the airport, you can call the airline and give them the number and all that, and the same thing should happen.

I have to agree totally with "David in Kenai" above.

The only thing that I'd add is that I always have two full days worth of clothing and 4 days worth of underwear in my carry-on bag(s).

I also recommend (as do all of the airlines) that you NEVER put anyting critically important in your checked bags. Things such as medication, passports and other ID, valuables, or critical presentation materials belong in your carry-on baggage.

If you plan carefully, delayed luggage is a minor annoyance.

some months in the past, we went to the Philippines for a holiday. after we checked in at l. a., there replaced into 2 flights with a similar airways as ours, that replaced into an hour aside. after we arrived to the Philippines, they counseled us that one among our bags replaced into lost. The airways purely counseled us that they are going to provide us a decision once they retrieve it. They ultimately got here across it 3 hours later. They reported it were given blended with the baggage from the different airplane which departed an hour beforehand we did in l. a..

umm, stop at a store, buy a change or two of clothing, and get on with my life. oh, and if i felt i had the time, or interest, probably file for lost luggage, see if i couldn't be compensated for my "$3000 camera." ahem.

go to the baggage claim, where they will provide you with an emergency kit (t-shirt, toothbrush...)
next day still lost: check with airline, then buy a set of new clothes
1 week, lost for good: make list of items lost and (in writing) ask for reimbursement (they have a limit of how much they'll pay)

You report to the airliner & Insurance company and make sure they compensate you.. I would be very sad and no longer in the holiday mood if that happened to me.
