Separation of church and state is not in the constitution either. It was thought of by Thomas Jefferson, but didn't make it in.

America was founded on good principles, all men created equal, fairness in laws, etc. These principles apply to ALL faiths and even tp Atheists

Even tho I believe in God, I am impressed by people who expect no reward but still do good works.

What most people object to is a particular religion being forced on then, in this case Christianity.

How would you feel if prayer in school required you to face east and bow toward Mecca, or to spin a Tibetan prayer wheel or if our money was printed with "In Allah we trust"?

Are you aware that "Under God" was only added to the Pledge of Allegience 50 years ago at the height of the Cold War when the Russians were invading countries for no reason and supporting other countries to do the same, similar to America invading Iraq and supporting Israel's invasion of Lebanon?

George Washington himself said that the US was NOT founded as a Christian nation in a letter to Muslim countries.

Well not everyone believes in god. America is obviously a place of diversity, and was really founded on immigrants if you think about it. Why aren't kids doing the round dance during recess to show togetherness then ? Why aren't they praising Allah ? Why aren't they praising Jesus when they get an A on an exam ? What I'm trying to say, is that this country is full of different beliefs. School is a place to learn math, english, history, etc. Church is where you learn about your religion and that's where it should stay. If you have a child and are so concerned about praying in school, send them to a school of whatever your religion is.

America was founded by a variety of men, including Thomas Jefferson, who was a Deist--he didn't believe in an active God. We were not founded "on God". We were founded on a purely political basis. We were no more founded "on God" than any other country, excepting for explicitly atheist countries, of course. Only a theocracy is founded "on God", and we have never been a theocracy. We were founded by people who, for the most part, adhered to some formal religion, but we were not founded as a state religion.

Where in the constitution/declaration of independence does it say God? America was founded by religious men true but it wasn't founded as a theocracy. It was founded on the belief that church had no business in government. So were aren't trying to get rid of God were just trying to keep God where God belongs.

The United States was not founded on god. It was founded on freedom of religion. Very different concept.

Since you brought up prayer in schools. Which prayer would everyone agree on? If you are Muslim, Jewish, Wiccan, Buddist, Protestant, Catholic which one prayer could all denominations of any one of these agree on? Now find one that all of them could agree on. Not to mention how an atheist would feel. I don't think that prayer should be said publicly in schools. You could take a moment of silence instead and let each person think on what they wish to. If you want to use your moment to pray, then do so, to whatever god you wish. If you want to use it to think about what game to play at recess, that is fine too. Let us get back to the basics of freedom not take any away from others just because their beliefs are different. There are enough things in schools that divide our children why place one more on them? They already have enough to worry about.

Good question! I thought America was founded on the principle of "freedom of religion"?? Not everybody believes in God...so prayer and reference to one religious belief in public schools, disrespects students with a different belief and ultimately dishonors the principle of "freedom of religion". I think it's a much better idea to offer a moment of silence and let each student use that time to honor their own beliefs.

There's more to it than that. America was founded by people who practiced christianity, on the idea that men could govern themselves. They were tired of corrupt men from the church abusing their powers, and decided that these men should have no legal influence on the running of the country. The founders prayed to God for the strength to make it work, but as far as the actual governing, they decided to do the best they could on their own. This is why children are not forced to pray to a God they may or may not believe in, or in a way that is strange to them (i.e. rosary beads for protestant children), at public schools. It is up to parents to instill those types of values in their own children- it isn't the schools place. I grew up a strong Christian, and the values and beliefs my parents taught me were in no way shaken by anything I learned (or didn't) in school. The schools don't prevent kids from praying, just from forcing other kids to. I strongly believe that the founders had a fantastic idea in separating the church from the state, as the government is inevitably corrupt, and it keeps just a little of that element out of the church. Besides, it's good for children to learn and respect that people have different beliefs than their own. When your church isn't legally burning you at the stake for your perceived sins, you'll appreciate the fact that governement was kept out of your church.

I'm curious what part of the Constitution you are referring to that founded the US on god? The founding fathers were Deists and secular Christians.

God used to be in public schools because they were not subject to the 1st Amendment until the 14th Amendment was passed.

America was also founded on the institution of slavery, the denial of property and voting rights to women, the massacre of Indians, the lynching of Loyalists and a million other things whose disappearance has made America a greater place.
