Just wondering if those different spellings mean last names of different ethnic backgrounds. Like a Fischer, Fisher, sort of thing.

Actually, BOTH words are found in German:
Burg = fortress, castle (often used of the town/city built near a castle; related to English "borough")
Berg = mountain

Thus they MEAN different things, they CAN have the same ethno-linguistic background. They are also similar in that they are names based on PLACES.

But when we're dealing with common Germanic words (as noted, "berg"/mountain is also found in Swedish.. also Norwegian, Dutch, etc.), it's difficult to be sure without knowing something about the REST of the name which language it is from.

I answered this question because my last name is Romesberg. I am part Irish, German and Swiss and have a smidge of Indian too. Some of our relatives spell their last name differently than "berg" some spell it "burg" there are different spellings to our last name too such as Reimesberg or Reimansburg and so on. I love my last name. What is your last name?

Berg means MOUNTAIN in Swedish. BURG is German and it means CASTLE. So, no they don't have anything incommon.
