Should people in a family respect someone who goes out of her way to help them, e.g looking after kids for a year, helping when someone was in the last months of their life and no one else could cope with it, or should that person just be classed as a mug?

I am 43 and I have done everything in my power since I was old enough to help my family. I get ignored by a lot of my family until they need me and I am too soft to say no. I don't expect something back but I do feel upset when I am constantly treated like a mug. I just wondered what other people thought.

You can't change who you are or how you are made up. You are a giver and that is a good thing. Unfortunately, we givers sometimes get taken for granted. But, in the end, we have done what is best. We gave our hearts and time to those in need.
Change your way of thinking. You are a better person because of the sacrifices that you have made and you will be paid in heaven for that. Who cares what they think............you will make a difference in this world.........because you cared.

I'd respect them for being tougher than the rest - though some would find it easier to take advantage. However, that doesn't make the helper a mug - just means they've got an inconsiderate family.

My question to you is what are you looking for?
Obviously your family knows who to count on in a tough situation and you have encouraged that by always being there. There is nothing wrong with being the person who is counted on though but it sounds like you want something in return and I am not sure what it is you want.
And if I am not understanding that from your question, do they understand you are looking for something from them? Probably not. You may want to talk to someone in your family and you could be surprised.

If I do anything to help someone and they repay me by calling me a mug, they don't get anything off me again.

I like helping others. People don't deserve to be egnored and not helped when they need it. Its RIGHT to want to help. Its stupid and CRUEL NOT to want to help.
