How many religions is there?

i have seen so many people with different relgions and too many to count and too many branched from catholicism.(like methedist,baptist but,what is the difference)and more religions i have never heard of pops up like the one that people wear red bands on their wrists (what is that religon, madonna and some celbs r into this)well i have always wondered how many religons there are in the world and what is the difference between them.

Number of adherents of world religions:
According to David Barrett et al, editors of the "World Christian Encyclopedia: A comparative survey of churches and religions - AD 30 to 2200," there are 19 major world religions which are subdivided into a total of 270 large religious groups, and many smaller ones. 34,000 separate Christian groups have been identified in the world. "Over half of them are independent churches that are not interested in linking with the big denominations."

I listed that quote from a website dedicated to religious matters. What follows here are my own words.

Basically to put it simply there are probably to many to count. Religion has been so many times subdivided that in essence it is an endless mass. The fact that there are over 34,000 separate christian groups should prove my theory. For the most part every religion is going to have something different from the next and some things will be the same. Now there are definitely going to be some major differences. I think it would be impossible to physically list the differences in each religion because the simple fact that there are so many different ones. Hope this helps you.

A religion is basically a group of people who believe in the same thing and actually standing up for that believe. It could be a God or a Thing. There are many religions (esp. in Christianity) where there are many sectors, but we all believe in the same God...It's just that we have different ideas on the ways we should serve him. But in the same tone, I can also worship an Xbox, and if my beliefs are strong enough, and I can muster up some influential folk. I can start my own religion and call it something like "Xboxian" or "X-Men" but that one was taken already. But the real reason why we have all these religions is that this is our way of changing God's Rules to suit ourselves. For example, In Christianity, it is wrong to have sex before you were married and if you did you're going to hell. Now, Most, but not all Christian Sects, doesn't mind if that happens ... and if it does ... Well, you can be just simply forgiven.

There are over 3500 cults in America alone. These cults span many different ideas including vampirism and Satanism. There are may different gods including Zeus, Osiris, Mut and many more.
Not only are the gods numerous but the followers of any given god can interrupt the teachings in any number of ways.
Keeping in mind that the official difference between a cult and a religion in the number of followers it has. I would say that at any given time you could not accurately determine how many religions there are out there.
And last time i checked Madonna was in to Kabbalah.

Madonna is into Kabalah
there are not a ton of religions but derivations of each religion, when people in the religion get mad and don't like the way things are run.
Africans in Africa have a lot of religions my friend told me... So I guess like millions if you count around the world.

There are two basic types of religion:

Type one - Biblical Christianity - faith based belief that receiving the atoning blood of Jesus pays the price for your sins and gives you the gift of eternal life - Eph 2:8 For by grace you are saved through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God's gift--
Eph 2:9 not from works, so that no one can boast

Type two - all other religions - believe that "good deeds/works" will get you into "heaven"

countless. and people just make their own crap up and start cults, there is no way to count them all. i would say atleast several hundred probably thousands if you count all the tiny religions of indigenous people in places like africa and south america
