If they are polite, whenever there is a noticible age difference, where the "maam" is the older. Any difference greater than 10 years deserves a "maam" unless directed to call them by some other name. Good luck

I think it depends upon what part of the country you are talking about. Down south it would be much younger than in the north. I got called Maam for the first time at age 18 when I was getting my car towed......

Any age. IT is not you or anything you do EXCEPT your gender that decides this. It is the person calling you maam. It is entirely how they use their manners.
If you have a child, you may be called maam by anyoen who acknowledges and respects your labor.
If you are 7 years old, an older gentlemen of pure manners would call you maam.
If you are 1000000 years old, anyone who has respect for your eldership would call you maam. So its nothign you do, its all them.

Usually in a uniformed context, if it was a man to whom you would address as Sir, the equivilant rank for a female would be referred to a Maam. I have also heard the Queen referred to as Maam.

That's a great question, I've been calling every woman Ma'am that I meet, do business with, etc. and I didn't even think that I was maybe making some of them feel old or something. I wouldn't mind being called "Ma'am" myself, I'm 29. I guess "Miss" is more appropriate? I was just trying to be polite anyway and I really didn't think Ma'am was offensive.

sometimes you can call a younger woman ma'am, and she complains it makes her feel old. i think those people are being too sensitive about a remark for which someone was just trying to be respectful. i say maam to everyone, even my girlfriends just playing around.

Ok, I've got this one....Once you have kids old enough to look at you like a mom! And it STINKS!

I know....I had a HARD time dealing with the Ma'am issue!

Now, as for when you SHOULD call someone Ma'am, that would be if they're your elder and you're not on a personal relationship/family etc. level with them!
