Since you have this posted in preschool, are you looking to get into this age group? If so, the requirements would be quite different than for "school age" of Kindergarten to 12th grade. A good place to start with a social service degree is with county offices such as Regional Centers, who deal with preschool age children with disabilities. They are always recruiting for Workers... their case loads are always full. Children's Services agencies may be another choice... they help families of children with disabilities find services and equipment. (In Calif. they are known as CCS) Another option would be to look into advocate-type services, such as centers who aid families with a child with special needs to get set up with daycares, lawyers, community supports, and in-home behavior plans. In Calif. where I am, you need 12 units of early childhood education units to work in a preschool (some allow 6 units if you are working towards the full 12). Check with your state to find out requirements. Hope this helps! Good luck!

Have you applied with agencies like Children's Services in your state? There may be openings for case workers...

If you want to teach special needs children, you will need an education degree. You may want to check in at a local college or university to see how much more coursework you would need before you earn your BA in Ed.

I have a family member who works as a teacher's aid for a special needs class. She has a 2 year degree. Her salary is not what the teacher earns, but she finds it very rewarding.

I hope I helped in some samll way.

If you are talking about teaching special education in a public school you DO need the teaching credentials, regardless of experience.

If you have a BA degree you can still teach going the "alternate route". A public school can hire you and send you back for the coursework and teaching exam.

Try your state's Department of Education website for more info!

Good luck (-;

apply to be a special ed teacher if you are interested in teaching. many states have teacher shortage and will let you in the door provided you agree to finish certain requirements (like getting a degree) later. i wish you great success!
