... along with the medical and chest x-ray certificate? The radiologist states on the certificate that the x=ray is normal and lungs are clear. Surely its not necessary to send the actual original X-ray as well?

I sincerley doubt you have to send it, I'm on the verge of applying for a partnership visa from a different country, and all you need are bank statements, proof of income, letter of invitation etc...

You shouldn't need to send in the actual x-ray plates - just the signed forms (make sure that the photograph has also been signed). As with other aspects of your application, NZ Immigration does have the discretion to request them at a later date if they think they need them to complete the assessment.

It depends. I'm doing the same thing at present. Im a NZer, my partner is american. If you're applying for it through the NZ embassy in USA, i'd send the xray. They're VERY difficult and anal to deal with. They're mainly americans employed by the NZ embassy and aren't as laid back as actual Nzers. If you ring and ask them they're likely to say no, you don't need to send the xray, then when you don't, they'll ask for it. Ive had much trouble with them. If you're applying through Immigration NZ, give them a quick email and ask if they do require it, if they say no, they mean no, and won't demand it later.
We actually gave up on dealing with the Embassy in USA due to total rudeness on their part. I'm pregnant, and we included ultrasound pictures of our unborn child, to show I actually am pregnant, and they said " that doesn't prove its his baby". Nice, really.
