A suggestion. Don't look down your nose at all 22LR!
Armscor M16 (22LR) Yep it looks like an M16.
Ruger 10/22 (22LR) this one's a ball with 30-50rd mags!!
The huge advantage with the 22LR is ammo cost, Wal-Mart sells 22 ammo by the brick(500rds) for around $9...1 30rd clip of 7.62 - 2.23 - 9MM ammo is going to cost you more than that!

Check a couple of places "gunbroker.com" an auction site, and "gunsamerica.com" where the sale price is listed. I just took a look at gunbroker to come up with a couple of ideas for you, they had 3600 semi-auto rifles up for bid(NO, I didn't check all 3600)...A big gun show is another place to look, once you get an idea of what you're interested in and its price range.

I almost forgot to mention one of my favorites - at a gun show you might be able to find a used Ruger Mini-14 in that price range. There are many advantages to the Ruger, including the Ruger name along with the fact that the Mini-14 "probable" has more add-ons than any other rifle ever built!

There aren't any other semi autos for that price than the sks or ak. Anything you would get at that price would be a bolt or a single shot. The next cheapest semi auto is the M1 Carbine at about $400, and next the Ruger mini 14 at about $500. You can get a M1 Garand for $365 if you join a CMP affiliated program, however you have to show proof that you completed a program that included live fire, and have to prove you are a U.S. citizen, and have to pay $30 or so to join a CMP program..
