The mosquito squirts in some chemical that makes the blood run free & not clot up. This causes the itch reaction.
You can stop the itching with a dab of Vicks Vapo-Rub, or some Listerine mouthwash, or just plain HOT water for a minute.

I don't know, but I can tell you this. If you scratch it enough to break the surface of the skin on the bite, put some spit on it. The enzymes in your spit will stop the itching.

Isn't it just an allergic reaction that our bodies have to their bites?

Anyway, run hot water over the bite (not excessively hot - you don't want to burn yourself, but as hot as you can bare it), and it will help your body release natural antihistamines that will relieve the itching.

the venom they inject when they bite you causes you to itch. i think they inject the venom so they can suck for a little while without the blood clotting. other insects do this too, and so do leeches, i think (but i don't think leech biting itches).
