Word processing is pretty much what it sounds like: putting written or spoken text down on paper. A great deal of word processing is typing, although it's absolutely necessary to use formatting rules to make the end printout look great.
Desktop publishing, on the other hand, is adding effects and pictures and graphics and creating printed, faxed, e-mailed and web-published final product. Think of it this way: word processing is putting out a business letter, whereas desktop publishing is putting out a slick glossy magazine.

Word processing has a small amount of document formatting (bold, indent, underline, etc.), whereas Desktop Publishing is page layout of documents (word processing), pictures, tables, etc.
While you can do desktop publishing on a program such as MS Word, it's slower and more time consumming than using a program such as Adobe PageMaker which is one of the best DTP programs.

in desktop publishing, the product is fancy printed out materials. in word processing, the product might just be electronic files. Word processing doesn't involve fancy layouts and graphics. It's just the words (with minimal formatting).

Desktop publishing (DTP) is the designing and producing professional quality documents that combine text, graphics, illustrations, and photographs.
DTP software provides ADDITIONAL TOOLS over and above those typically found in word processing packages, including design templates, graphic manipulation tools, color schemes or libraries, and multiple page wizards and templates
