You could check with your local animal shelter, ASPCA, SPCA, rescue groups, you could call the local vet's office for information on how to contact most of the rescue groups, humane society, etc. I would stay away from pet shops, because most of them get their pups from puppy mills, and most of them are in bad health. Most towns or major towns nearby should have animal rescue shelters.
Those are the foremost and best places to adopt puppies.

Try going to your local pound there are plenty of dogs there that could use your help. They could be put down if you don't adopt them. I would try there first.

Your local shelter will do if you are not sure of the closest one to you go on www.petfinder.com and plug in your zip code in the area in the left hand corner and it will show you dogs that are in shelters in your area

ALOT OF TIMES THERE WILL BE DOGS IN THE LOCAL NEWS PAPER,PEOPLE MOVE AND CAN NOT TAKE THERE PUPPIES,OR THEY HAD PUPPIES AND THEY NEED A GOOD HOME ...LIKE YOU....
