Because he truly did love Him. He knew who He was and believed in Him. He is not saying that he is the only one who loved him. He is saying in his writings that he was acknowledging that he loved Jesus.

John 201:20 identifies the disciple whom Jesus loved - "the one who also had leaned back on His bosom at the supper and said, 'Lord, who is the one who betrays you?'"
You can cross-reference this in John 13:21 - 25. With a bit more study, I think you will see that that individual is John.

As is the case of John and Luke neither refer to themselves by name in thier books.. it was a style of writing
John is in Matthew MArk and Luke by name, Peter James and John, Peter and John, Peter James John and Adndrew but is absent from his own book except posisbly in the form of the mysterious unnamed disciple and sometime caled the disciple Jesus loved.
so John is in the story, we know from Matthew Mark and Luke and if the disciple who Jesus loved is not John we have a real myster on our hands
Slthough John names significant people, Mary Mag at the resurection and cross a mysterious unamed eyewitness is everywhere for example: with john the bapitst, at the last supper, in the high preists house, at the cross, after the resurection.. and named as a man in most cases and never a woman
So..it's John... and in the end it is a style of humbleness, Luke does it too, in the entire gospel of Luke and Acts which is long, he says we alot but not Luke by name
it was understood the disciple who Jesus loved, was a pen name for John and used out of humility
Dan Browns view that the disciple who Jesus loved was Mary Mag... is the worse choice and there is no reaons to support that conclusion... MAry is named int he book in key places and stands next to the disciple who Jesus loved in two of them: the cross and the empty tomb

John 6:69 And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.
