My darling cat loves to sit by the windows and whenever one is left open downstairs she darts right on out. She's the first cat I've had so I'm worried that if I leave an upstairs window open she'll wonder out and then think she can make it to the ground. Is this a possibilty or would she be smart enough to know better?

If she is anything like my next door neighbours 3 cats, who are totally psychotic, she will possibly have a go, cats seem to think they are invincible, but if you are concerned, cant you just keep the windows closed enough for her not to get out, my neighbour does but his cats have always been indoor cats, just please keep an eye on her and make sure she does not hurt herself

I probably wouldn't bet against it..... If the windows have like bit up top that open out (say about 12" area of the window with an opening too small for the cat to get through), use them instead of the full length bits.

Or another idea...... the double glazing units in my Grandma's bedroom can be opened by slight amount (about a finger width) then locked in place.

My brothers cat used to sit on the window ledge of his flat which was two floors up and fell off the ledge on a number of occasions ! especially as the cat got older or saw a bird fly underneath it!!

My advice is to keep the main windows shut.

My cat would go out on the roof, but she wouldn't jump off to the ground. So I think they are smart enough to know better.

Get a screen. They do have great depth perception but she still could "fall' out I wouldn't chance it. Our upstairs windows are the favorite places for our 3 cats..

hopefully she would know better, my cat jumps in and out of the downstairs windows but she just sits on the hopper of the upstairs ones and has never actually jumped out,

Your cat will jump, if you're lucky. But be prepared to defend your alibi because the ASPCA may investigate the fall as a possible homicide. They will be able to tell, so you might want to wear a rubber suit before you nudge Mr. Boots off the sill!

My suggestion is to get a screen, particularly one without holes in it. My cat went out one of our upstairs windows because of a hole in the screen. We didn't know she was gone until a thunder started rumbling and we heard her meowing outside the door.

The cats natural balance helps them.
Mine go out and climb about on the porch roof.
Since they can turn easily there is no problem (unless your cat is a bit unbalanced!)
Seen them in Hong Kong on small balconies and they do very well.

you know when they are about to make a jump there eyes fixate as to where they are going to jump and their heads move around for the best angle of the jump? That's when they calculate it by natural instinct, if they detect that they jump is too large for them, then they will just sit on the windowsill, (mine does that, but not in the summer!)

there is a possibility of the cat falling--even though' i think that they know they are up high. i wouldn't take a chance--why even a gust of wind can cause an imbalance and then the dear thing would be in cat heaven--or worse, permanently disabled.
