VA has no state requirement that you buy a handgun permit prior to purchasing the weapon, in contrast to a number of states (noticeably North Carolina).
However, you will have to go through an instantaneous NCIS check when you purchase the weapon, as required by the Brady Bill. That means your firearms dealer will run your SSN and license information to check and see if you are eligible to buy the handgun.
In order to get a VA concealed carry permit, you must complete a qualifying handgun safety course (any NRA-certified course will do), fill out an application, and take it to the sheriff's office in the county where you reside, along with proof of residency, your license, the serial number (etc) for the gun, and a significant chunk of change (I believe $90 last time I checked). You have to pay to get fingerprinted at the station, and so long as you clear their system they must issue a permit to you within 90 days.

I don't know how it is in Va.. but in Michigan you have to go to the State Police or Sheriff to get a Purchase Permit, then you can go buy a pistol, when you buy the pistol the gun seller has to stamp or sign the permit.. you then have a week or so to get back to the police to have them complete the registration.. If you bought it at a gun show or from a "buddy" i'm not sure how that works, but it won't hurt to go to the police and ask.. present it in this way "If I wanted to register a pistol I bought, what would I do to make it legal?"..

Your local firearms dealer can provide all the answers and some offer approved training if necessary for a concealed carry permit in Virginia. The National Rifle Association internet website is also helpful. If you're buying a new gun, take a look at the new Taurus PT1911. Lot of features, good price, and I believe they offer a smaller version. "Old Slabsides", the orginal model 1911 and 1911A1, aren't all that concealable, but it can be done, and who cares as long as you're legal and just want to be discreet?
No one has to register a handgun in the United States, as this requirement would be in violation of the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

My brother in law carries a gun in NC. He told me you have to have a permit. It is your right to carry a gun. If you get caught without permit you are in a world of hurt. You will never legally carry a gun again.
Don't you need permit first? Ask a sales person at gun counter in WalMart - I would think they know...
Plus, you will need bullets....
