She really gets hysterical when she even sees them. Not normally an 'over-reactor' , but with this fear has been known to curl up in fetal position with her fingers in her ears at birthday parties if balloons are there. She says she's afraid of them popping and the loud noise.

She's already afraid of them - of course I wouldn't buy one and pop it in her face, geez!

Try to ease her into contact.
Buy a package. Let her handle one flat. See if she will put a
little air into one. Try to ease her into overcoming the trauma.
Frightening her with one might be the cause from years past.
Hey, I hate the popping sound myself. Good Luck!

Hey there! Take her on a balloon ride in one of those really big ones. Explain to her that this is a bigger version of the smaller one, and she can see what it looks like on the inside. Maybe that will help her understand why they pop. Good luck!

she could have a sensitivity to noise - but let her control the situation - take a balloon and put it on a cushion then let her sit on it -make her in control let her get used to the sound and surprise - then go on from there and let her pop it while stepping on it - you too should get scared but make it funny - in all fears to get over them you must face them - ask her what bothers her the most about them and then show her you too also don't like it but the excitement is also fun

Is it really a big deal that she doesn't like balloons. Don't buy her any then. I have a girlfriend that is 35 and she feels the same way about them. Let it be she is fine. Is it any different than someone that is scard of spiders?

Hold one right in front of her face then pop it.
You know, I would be the worst parent. This kind of behavior just makes me want to ask the kid "What is your problem? It's a balloon!!! Get over it!!!" You can't use logic on a child and that drives me bonkers.

i think if she's afraid of it, leave her alone, no one likes their fear thrown in their face. If you come across some balloons then pick her up and hold her close, tell her there is nothing to be afraid, and let her feel safe with you.

Fill a room full and let her jump on them. She needs to know she's in control of her emotions. Let her get her revenge on some balloons!
