When I was younger my dad owned two german shepard and wolf mix. They are very big dogs but we never had any problems with them around me or my younger sister. The best thing to do is to train them when their puppies like obedience classes. That will make sure that the dog will not turn out aggressive. The only reason most dogs are aggressive is because of the way the owner treats it or how the owner trained them. But by my own personal experience these dogs are great. They will protect you and your children but also be a good playmate. I hope this helped you!

Definitely NOT safe around kids - they are wild animals and can be very unpredictable and aggressive. Either get a real dog or volunteer at a wildlife rescue center where you can safely be around them.

Wolf hybrids are notoriously less stable than dogs. Also, the liability is enormous now - you may be unable to get a homeowner's insurance policy if you have a hybrid. If it bites some innocent person, you can be sued for everything you own or even go to prison for criminal negligence. See the case in California where two dogs killed a woman in the hallway of her apartment building...

According to the fatal dog attacks statistics, 5% of them were by wolf-dogs - which is a LOT considering how few of them there are.

Most dogs that are claimed to be wolf-hybrids aren't. Wolves and wolf-dogs are not appropriate pets. They are unpredictable. You may have one for 10 years and all of a sudden it'll snap and kill your child. Not to mention that in many states they are illegal to have as a pet, or if they are allowed, they often have many restrictions on them, such as being required to be on a chain and have a muzzle on at all times.

Run a search with the terms wolf dog hybrid and you will get lots of info, including this site: http://www.dogexpert.com/Miscellaneous/The%20Wolf-Dog%20Hybrid.pdf

If you want a dog that is good around kids but looks like a wolf, consider a husky or malamute, or really any of the "northern" breeds of dog. Check the AKC listings to find one of these breeds, and more info about them.

Many states ban the sale and/or ownership of wolf hybrids.

Given that the animal is part wolf, they're a little too close to wild to be completely tamed. They are aggressive - that's the nature of a wolf. I don't know about their behavior around children but I certainly wouldn't trust my children around a wild animal.

No, they say to never trust a hybrid wolf completely. It takes a special devoted kind of person to own them. They still have some of that wildness in them. I would definitely not trust them around kids... heck, I wouldn't completely trust *any* dog around kids, but definitely not one that was half wild animal.

It looks like casey's friend had a good experience (a couple of posts up) but I sure wouldn't take the chance with my kids.

NO
They are many things. And there are reasons to own one. But "nice" isnt one of them. They have half dog and half wolf. That means half of them has to be treated with some understanding of wolf instincts.
They arent necessarily "mean" but if you dont know what you are doing then they can do what they think is the "right" thing, which would be totally opposite of what you wanted.

wow, negative people. I have a friend who has a wolf/German Shepard. She is the most loving dog I have meet. I've had my children around her and she loves them!!! As with any dog it is all in how you treat them and how you raise them, treat them with love and they will love you, treat then mean and they will eventually turn on you. I am not sure of the percentage of wolf in my friends dog, but I do know the percentage of German Shepherd is higher. Check with you state laws before getting one if you plan on it, the are illegal in most states.

A cross-bred wolf is not a dog. It is a wild animal. They retain their hunting instincts and agression. They can also be very destructive to property such as furniture, etc. If you choose to own one you're on your own responsibility as an adult but I wouldn't keep one around children.

No wolf hybrids do not make good pets. I would never let one around a small child.

A friend of mine runs a large city humane society. She says that they are number one on the most likely to bite list.
