It does help if you can make yourself do it. Sometimes when you are depressed you don't want to do anything. Just getting outside when the weather's nice and walking will help clear your head a little. Medicine helps as well.

Yes. I have suffered from depression for many years and when I exercise I feel very calm for a while. Exercise releases endorphines and has been shown to be just as effective as medication in some patients. Just a walk every evening or morning will do you a world of good. It's hard to make the first move sometimes but well worth it.

I'm an active cyclist and I find riding to be quite calming and relaxing, I never feel more at peace and ease as when I'm riding. And I NEVER feel depressed while riding and for several hours or a day after riding. So, yes, exercise does work wonders for depression. The catch 22 is if you are depressed it's difficult to find the motivation in the first place to get started and I admit many times I do not ride due to depression.

For a while exercise had helped, specifically when I found exercises I could do consistently. Problem though is I was using a temporary solution as if it were permanent. Hence once it stopped it's effectiveness the negativity resurfaced. My advice is that exercise can help a lot temporarily, though try not to think of it as a permanent means of calming ones self.

yes it is, but you have to select an exercise that is not going to triggert anxiety. Try different sport and see which one best fit you. Try it at least 5 time a week for 30 min.

My husband is always somewhat depressed and he has to run for the endorphins to kick in, otherwise he gets REALLY down. It's his natural antidepressants, and it really works for him. He tries to go 3 miles or more every day.
