The Bible calls Her a "Helpmate." Is that the same as an "equal?"
How can men and women be told they are "equal," when they each fulfill totally different roles in Marriage?
Isn't that kinda like (the analogy of) comparing apples to oranges?
Just Points To Ponder!
I have attended church 90% of my 43 yrs. on this earth and never have felt like men use the Bible to control women.
I do feel the World has misunderstood and perverted the teachings in the Bible on this subject. (That started with the Womens' Libbers!)

Because men think they can justify their oppression of women by saying that the Bible tells them it's OK. They obviously have a flawed view of the Bible. Woman was not created for man to abuse. Woman was created to be a helpmate, from the side. As you so eloquently put it: "not to have been taken out of man's head to be lorded-over by him, nor from his feet to be trampled upon, but from his side to be equal with him, from under his arm to be protected by him and from near his heart to be loved by him."

Because theyre caught up in the belief that they r the head and we are the tail. It is written in the new testament. However that law only applys 2 marriage.Thats why it is so important 2 read Corinthians7;1-40 .Lots of ppl get stirred up when they read that mystery of truth for some its painful 2 know what God requires.Thats why ppl need 2 be aware before going into oath 2 promise their future by marrying instead of rushing they need 2 make up their minds if this is what they want before saying I-do.
If one of the spouce dies then they r freed from the laws.

Often men will use any excuse to control women in an attempt to make themselves feel better. When they use the Bible, they claim to have God on their side, and who really wants to argue with God? I do think it's wrong; I feel that women and men are DIFFERENT but EQUAL. Then again, I am a women and a rabid femenist.

Galations 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
In my opinion, from years of studying the Bible and following Christ, the positive verses (towards women) you cited refer to what God's perfect will is. But God doesn't force anything upon us; He first shows us the value of doing it His way. It took awhile to bring about the changes God desired because He allows us to keep our freewill while gently leading us in His direction. Woman also have to realize the truth of Galatians 3:28 and they still need to believe it more today.
Men needed to get to the point in their relationship with God to allow themselves to see that being equal with women was what God was trying to show them. The Bible is pretty clear about that if you look for it.
In the negative verse (towards women) you referred to and also some others about women not being in authority over a man or teaching a man, I believe these were situational in nature.
Let me explain, Paul was dealing with real life issues with people who hadn't yet learned all that God had for them to learn, and these situations had to do with the culture at the time they were living in. These were not long term eternal commands given to govern the conduct of women forever; they were forms of discipline Paul used to instruct the believers who were having a particular problem.
There have been many scriptures throughout the Bible that have been specifically written to a specific situation. As an example, in Deuteronomy 24:1-3 Moses give instructions for a person to be divorced. In Matthew 19:6-8 Jesus told the people that Moses permitted divorce as a concession to their hard-hearted wickedness, but it was not what God had originally intended.
God is very practical. He allowed the writers of His Word to deal with specific situations. We are still dealing with divorce today and I’m sure if a woman starts standing up and yelling questions at the preacher during a sermon, she might again be instructed to wait and talk to her husband at home. (And if men were doing this: they would have probably been corrected in the same way.) It was never meant to be taken as an eternal commandment. We need to read the Bible with guidance from the same Spirit under whose power it was written.
Finally, I believe women should be allowed to preach, teach, minister, be a man's boss, be a wife, a mother, a sister, a lover, lead a government, or lead a church. It takes us big tuff men some time to understand Galatians 3:28, but we are getting there.

For the same reasons that religions are the cause of wars - not very logical is it? It's their own personal way of thinking they can get what they want the way they want it - it's called selfishness and greed. It has nothing to do with the Bible, just as war doesn't. It has to do with man's fallen state before a Holy God - and that is to be self-focused, self-demanding, and to be master of all that is around of him, but not of what is within him. It goes for women too, they just can't find scriptures to help them "prove" their points!!

I actually use to go to this church where I came to realize that they thought we females had to be devoted so much to our husbands. I don't disagree that we have to be devoted, but we expect the same back, equally. Islike the woman were kinda of brainwashed that they would flip over backwards for their husbands in a low way. I think a lot of people misinterpret the bible in a lot of ways and use to for their advantage.

people use the Bible for many reasons.... people play games and are sinners... it's important to carefully try to find the real intent of a passage
sin causes an unheathy control... and this is part of the curse ... and a matter of fact it isnt limited to men... many take Genesis the curse in Genesis in part to meanHe wil rule over you but you desire (to control) will be for him so there will be a tendency for a struggle for power as a result of the fall... we need grace and mercy

Because many women believe the Bible to be the word of God instead of ancient human males.
Shame on women for going along with it.

you are right.. humans are always going to take one thing and twist it around to fit THEIR wants and needs and thoughts. =T it's just plain old selfish, negative and controlling behavior. i believe that males and females have their roles, yes. Men need to *take care* of their wives and household financially. Women need to support and take care of their family emotionally. no where does that say u disrespect , force, or make someone do what u want. the men need to be ABLE and WILLING to make good decisions that affect the family as a WHOLE for the greater good.
