All i want is a site where i can put in a desired last name and POOOF !!!! Get its origin . All the flippin sites out there and not one I have found is that simple.

However, a lot of people named "Smith" or "Carpenter" or "Miller" in the US descend from Germans named "Schmidt" or "Zimmerman" or "Mueller" who got tired of having to spell it for their neighbors, so they used the English spelling. I had a Huguenot ancestor (Hugeunots are French Protestants) who came to the US named "Souplis". He changed it to "Souplee" so people would pronounce it properly.

So, if your surname comes up English, there is a chance your ancestors were not.

what might be the name you want to know about? it's hard to find any good sites that you don't have to pay for. i've looked a lot for mine and turned out it i found it by accident.
