My Acer laptop is TravelMate 2700. The problem was not there when I first bought the laptop. At the same time the volume indicator on the taskbar has seized to function

I don't think there is any way to intentionally disable those on a laptop. So it sounds like they have gone bad. If it is not under warranty you may be out of luck. But you could try Best Buy or CompUSA service departments to see if they can fix it without it costing as much as getting a new laptop.
