Seems like an odd way to love your cat. There are a lot of good medications for people with allergies on the market. Your father should go to see an allergy specialist before you make that kind of decision.

No that is cruel to the kitty. Cats need human attention and will be so lonely in a basement all alone. Please do not do that. If you get in the habit of vacuming often, like every other day or so, this helps immensely with cat dander that is what causes alergies. Another tip is to brush your cat often (do this outside) to help get some of the dander off. You will see that over time your dad will get used to the cat and his alergies will get better. Keeping the cat in the basement is really a terrible idea and if none of the above works, you should try to find a good home for the kitty.

Cat's need attention, they need people to interact with. I don't know about where you live but in Texas it's very hot and in a basement, I can only imagine it even hotter. Another thing did you know that if a cat is in a dark room for long periods of time, they may become blind. Just something to think about. Why not take it to the SPCA. I don't think your dad's gonna wake up one day and not be allergic to cat's anymore and since you can't get rid of you dad, maybe you should consider getting rid of the cat. Just to give it a better life you know.

Oh my Gosh. This poor cat, what a life it has. Why not make Dad live in the basement? Maybe because it is cruel? Give that cat to someone who can give it a loving home and live in it with them. Don't get any more pets unless you know for a fact that dad isn't allergic.

If your dad is allergic to cats then the cat being in the house even in the basement will set him off. It isn't fair for any animal to be cooped up. Find him a good home.

No get rid of the dad! Just kidding. Seriously, let the cat go to a home where she can move about the house freely. Outside is bad because cats get killed by cars or stuck up trees. We had a cat for 12 years and he was never outside. It is the only way for a cat to have a long healthy life.

I would suggest you shouldnt have a cat at all if youre going to leave it in the basement. Have you tested whether your dad is allergic to your cat? Allergies to cats are generally because of the oils produced in their fur and some cats produce more oils than others. Therefore, you cant be allergic to every cat, its just those that overproduce the oils in the fur. Its worth checking - my dad is allergic to most cats but not mine.

first i would advice your dad to go to a specialist to make sure his allergy is for cats.
he may not be allergic to the cat per-say but to micro dust on the cat fur, micro dust which can be found on sofas and other things.
an allergy to a cat mean being allergic to enzymes in his saliva.
after you confirmed that your dad is allergic to the cat you can do two things:
one:
taking the meds the doc will prescribe for your BF and second go see an alternative healer. I heard acupuncture helps as well as alternative meds. I heard people who stopped drinking and eating cow milk and cow milk by product they switched to other kind of milk. This things help.
Second:
Comb your cat each day and vacuum your house before your BF comes.
Also I heard of allergy going away on their own after awhile.
and no closing your cat in the basement will only hurt him in the long run. he can become depressed.

If you dad is truly allergic to cats, keeping her at all isn't fair to him. And locking her in the basement 99% of the time isn't fair to the cat.
Has your dad seen an allergy specialist? Is he SURE it's cat dander? (Some people who don't love cats make up excuses to rationalize not having a cat) Has he tried allergy medicine?

I would suggest either you find the cat a good home or get rid of the Dad. I almost bypassed your question because it is so ridiculous. Is is obvious you are not a cat lover, if you need to ask if a cat should be locked up constantly. Do the cat a favor and find her a good home.

dad take an antihistamine....i am allergic to them and i can still manage. use an allergen reducing carpet fresh...i like arm and hammer allergen reducer, spray the couch, curtains (fabric) with the allergen reducer febreze....try that first. the next step would be to get a vaccum that has a hepa filter. it doesn't have to be super expensive either. DON'T bathe your cat very often. this drys out their skin and causes more dander (which is what your dad is allergic to. not the cat itself). i think there's even some thing you can get at a pet store to sprinkle on the cat to reduce the dander but i'm not completely sure about that. hope this helps.
