Well, you don't have to eat salad everyday and you don't have to go broke to buy healthy food. If you have issues or a family history of colon cancer or other serious family history of health issues, that's the time to eat salad everyday and really be more vigilant about your health. There is balance and some basic things to look for. A person can even shop Aldi and eat healthier. It's good to eat healthy because you'll get colds and flu less often, will have more energy to do fun things and be more alert and ready to take on the world in your life. You just watch out not to each too much saturated fats, preservatives, artificial stuff and nitrites. Include some vegetables that you like in your diet and some fruits and you'll be well on your way without going broke and eating salad everyday.

Not being able to afford to eat healthy is a myth! We tend to eat more when we eat processed foods, because we are not getting the nutrients from "french fries" "chips" Pizza". White flour, like bread and pasta, turns to sugar in the blood system. Which makes us crave more. You actually spend more money eating unhealthy than you do in a healthy way. Once you beging eating right you will notice that it isn't anymore expensive than eating unhealthy foods. You can do it! All it takes is a little finessing, with your usual routine. Plan what you are going to eat before you go and buy it. That does help. Especially if you are on a budget. We are lower middle class folks and we eat salads, salmon, turkey , whole grains, no red meat! No fried foods. Nothing from a box. Take care and best of luck!

I suggest vitamins if you can't eat healthy. Some "health foods" are not too expensive. Whole wheat bread is only about $1 more than white, and it is a lot healthier. Egg whites are a good source of protein, without the fat. I've seen a dozen sold for as cheap as $.60. Oatmeal is also extremely cheap. You don't need salad everyday. Actually, lettuce itself is very low in nutrients. Basically, it is the antioxidants in healthy food that is important. Try to fill your fridge with a variety of fruits and vegetables. Romaine lettuce isn't too expensive, and apples aren't too bad either. Just sacrifice the unhealthy food. Hope this helped.

The healthy stuff isn't more expensive, if you're talking about things you prepare yourself. If you're talking about the pre-made stuff, then yea... That's how it goes. You have to pay someone to prepare it first, right? If you plan ahead, and don't mind working in the kitchen, it can be much MUCH cheaper to eat healthier foods. Buy in bulk and separate into smaller containers. I buy broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, celery, red peppers... Then I cut them up and put portions into snack bags. Then you've got lots of snacks available. And for 1 lb of each of those, that's about 8 bucks. 5+ lbs of food for $8, compared to the 14oz (less than a pound) frozen pizza for $4... It just takes planning, and a bit more work. But it can surely be done.
As for why you should eat salad everyday, it's not SALAD that you should eat, but just a variety of vegetables.

You can afford to eat healthy - just buy small amounts (what you'd use in a day or two) of whatever is in season. That's often the best priced stuff.
Also, as far as meats go - watch for sales and stock up. Most markets run a sale on chicken breast every six weeks.

Its very easy and fairly affordable to eat cheap as long as you don't mind the extra effort. Just don't eat any bread/grain or meats. All thats left is vegetables. You can get vegetables for extremely cheap at local produce stands. The only problem is that you'll often be hungry and you'll often have to shop because vegetation goes bad very quickly.

Eating healthy isn't about salads.......its eating a balanced dietwithout over eating. Lean meats, chicken, vegetables, fruits....these things can be very in-expensive..its in the way you prepare them that causes the problems......instead of frying, try grilling or baking......instead of cream based sauces, try broth based, instead of using butter and sat to season veggies, try diferent seasonings. You have to set your mind to try different things, and it will get easier as you go. In my house its hard because my family is so used to the way we used to cook. Like last night, I grilled lean steaks for my husband and 19 year old son (I don't eat red meat), I also boiled new red potatoes, but instead of using water, I boiled them in low salt beef broth, then seasoned them with a vegetable seasoning (no salt), and also fixed asparagus. It was very good and in place of the meat for me, I ate some cottage cheese for protien.......Dont stop eating the things you like...just fix them different........

Have you considered frozen vegetables? Cheaper, easier to store and maintain, still healthy. Or if you're not into vegetables, try a vegetable cocktail like V8. There are some pretty great generic versions out there now.
