Just want to know what difference is on dvd-r discs - i use them to copy movies etc and have always used 8x now most shops only sell 16 x what is the difference???

16x will record at 16 times the playing speed, whereas 8x will record at only 8x the playing speed. In other words 16x discs will record a DVD twice as fast as the 8x discs.
So if, for example, it has taken you 1 hour to record a film on your old discs, the new ones will record that same film in 30 minutes.
This in no way detracts from the quality of the playback.

The 16x discs will theoretically burn twice as fast as the 8x discs. However, the discs only reach their peak burn speed near to the end of the burning process, so it is very unlikely that you would see the halving of the burn time.
It is still worth getting the highest write speed discs that you can though...as long as you are sure that they are of a good enough quality. Some cheap DVDs don't last more than a few years.

The number 8 or 16 is the write speed. This tells how fast the DVDs are able to be written (burned). Your DVD burner determines the maximum write speed, but say if you have a 16x burner. and your using 8x DVDs, you could be using 16x DVDs to get the maximum speed. If speed isn't important to you, then don't care. Any DVD should work with your burner.

The 8x and 16x designation refers to how quickly you can burn (record) content onto the DVD disc. The 16x allows you to burn content twice as fast -- provided that you actually have a DVD burner capable of burning at that speed.
The 16x discs are backward-compatible, though. Which means that even if you only have a 4x DVD burner, you can still use a 16x disc -- you just won't be able to take advantage of the faster available burning tolerance.

It's the speed of burning on the DVD ... 16x is 2 times as 8x ... but usually the DVD disk itself should be compatible .. there is a number on the DVD disk that tells the maximum speed that can be successfully burned with

16x burns quicker than 8x but if you only have a 4x/8x burner it will only burn at 4x/8x even using a 16x dvd.
There is no software the can burn at the disc speed anyway, the speed is determined by the buffering of the data by the software.

speed larger number faster but all hardware as well as software is unable to handle higher speeds so before buying good deal discs of 10,000 make sure it works. The burner I uses says it can do a faster speed but needed to update drivers and still have yet to get to upper speed which maybe caused by the configuration of the ram and chip

Right. it's a speed at which they burn. 16 would be better than 8. Check if your burner and software can write at 16x - I think you could use 16x discs even if your machine doesn't write that fast. But if your machine can write at 16x too, then you are in for a real treat.

8x means the dvd is compatible with burners up to 8x speed
16x means the dvd is compatible with burners up to 16x speed
if you dont know what speed your burner is, go with the 16x speed disc
