Baptist and Methodist are both Christianity. They're called denominations. Why would they be different? It's because each stresses on something that is in the Bible to be their main mission. For example, Baptist stresses a lot on John the Baptist and renewal of faith through baptism. The seventh-day-adventists believe and stress on the seventh day sabbath (Saturday). Roman Catholics firmly believe the whole and put Mary as a respected figure so much so which has caused many misunderstanding throughout history eversince King Henry VIII filed a divorce on his wife. Neverheless, we should all believe and trust in Jesus alone, and not be biased with denomination factors. They can be biased but the central of belief is still Jesus Christ Himself Who is the Origin of all. Hope this helps.

This is a difficult question and I see several well thought out answers that are way more verbose than necessary. Without getting into too many specifics the bottom line on why religions differ is HOW they believe in God (if there is one). Of course they may/might have a different concept of who or what God is or isn't, but it's how they believe that's the MAJOR difference. PEACE!

Man's ego and greed... There is only one "church" that is for those bound for heaven. No "religion" can get you into Heaven...
I belong to a Baptist congrigation, but that is not what is going to count in Heaven...nor will Methodists, Assembly of God, Lutherin...or any other man church.
Only those, and they may be from different man churches, who are of The Church of which Jesus The Christ is The Head will enter Heaven... a lot of pews in a lot of man's churches will still be full after the Rapture of The Church.
Here is a link to my testimony of my first day of The Christian Faith. So you can know "where I'm comming from".. from there you can go to the welcome page, and if you like, you can read some further in my website.

All religions are same so far as the Truth is concerned but they differ in traditions. The difference as you have referred is due to the sayings of particular religious personality in that religion and sects are formed. In turn they differ from each other on trifling issues and various followers rally around a particular religious personality and are called by various groups.

For Islam the basis is: La illaha ilAllah Muhammadur Rasoolullah (Arabic)
No god is god except THE GOD and Muhammad is the Messenger of THE GOD.
once one believes in this, they then establish the 5 pillars of Islam in their life:
1. Faith in the statement above
2. Offer prayers 5 times a day, on time, towards Mecca
3. To give the poor regular charity
4. To fast during the holy month of Ramadan every year from sun up to sun down abstain from food and drink (for healthy people who are past puberty, not pregnant or old or sick)
5. To make a holy pilgrimage to Mecca once in your lifetime if you can afford to do so,

(Baptists and Methodists are actually different denominations of the same religion, Christianity.)
An excellent website is http://www.religioustolerance.org/ - it covers all religions (and cults, etc.) very well.

There are five major pillars of Islam which are the articles of faith. These pillars are 1) the belief (Iman) in one God and that Muhammad (P) is His messenger, 2) prayer (Salat) which are prescribed five times a day, 3) fasting (Siyam) which is required in the month of Ramadan, 4) charity (Zakat) which is the poor-due on the wealth of the rich and 5) hajj which is the pilgrimage to Mecca once in a lifetime if one can afford it physically and financially

Fear of the unknown (death) is the basis for all belief systems that advocate life after death.
