I have an idea to get in better shape. Instead of going into a big diet-binge or killing myself in the gym, I'll start at a moderate level of both exercise and also dietary control. Then I'll very gradually, on a weekly basis make adjustments to increase the exercise and dietary controls.

For example week 1 I might still allow myself mcDonalds 3 times a week, then week 2, I'll only allow it 2 times aweek, etc. And on exercise side, it's pretty straightforward--run further, heavier weights by 5% or so.

My hope is that this will allow me to make the change in a more permanent way.

What do you think? will this work?

This is an excellent start. No one acchieves their goals over night. It took me about ten years of training to really start to see the results that I wanted. This doesn't mesn that it will take you this long but by doing the right thing on a regular basis and EDUCATING yourself on the subject it'll be virtually impossible for you to succed.Learn about diet and fitness through a reliable source and don't believe everything that you hear because most of it is wrong.Set realistic goals and take note of what's working.Good luck.Joe

this is the healthier way to do it. those fad diets are just that...fads. a lot of them have been proven to be dangerous in fact to some people. the key here is just stick with it. also, for maximum results, food is huge. the best bit of information i have ever received about exercise is "40% lifting, 40% diet, 15% rest, 5% genetics" keep that in mind, and you'll be ready to get really started.

You call avoiding McDonalds a diet binge?

If you insist on eating that junk, 1 time a week is the most you should eat there.

sounds like a great idea.
better than heaping all the workouts on at once and killing yourself...coz then you would just feel awful and give up trying to be healthier if it made you feel awful after the first workout or 2.
good luck!

I think it works better if you do it gradually.
