I've been having problems w/ my platinum engagement ring. I've only had it for 5 years and I'm afraid that my husband got jipped when he bought it. It's now so bent (not from pressure but just from normal wear!!) that I was advised by the jeweler that sold it to me to just put it away and not wear it. She also said that platinum tends to fade in color and that it looks old before its time. Another jeweler has looked at the ring and says there is more alloy in it that what it should have...I need help! Is it possible that I'm being duped by the jeweler who sold the ring to us? How should I go about finding out if it's not 100%?

My ring is platinum. On the inside of the band it says "plat" just as gold rings do. Platinum rings do not fade in color, white gold rings do. Plat. rings do however get an unpolished look to them and should be buffed every couple of years o bring out their shine. There is almost no way that a ring of platinum quality should be bending. You got had my dear...get it appraised by another jeweler and then see if there is anything you can do about it legally. Good Luck

Platinum should not bend from normal wear. Platinum does have a tendency to look "worn" quicker than gold, but it should not be changing color.

Did you get an appraisal on the ring when you purchased it and does that appraisal say platinum?

I would pay the $75-100 for a formal appraisal of the ring from an outside party. Ask them to verify the metal on the ring. If they say it isn't platinum, I would take that information back to the original jeweler. However, if they would do something as shady as sell you a ring that wasn't platinum, they probably won't do anything to "fix" the problem. Unless you have an appraisal from when you bought it with photos and identifying markings labeled, there isn't really a way to prove that it is the same ring they sold you, so taking them to court will be difficult as well.

And for the saleslady to tell you to put your 5 year old platinum ring away and not wear it is quite simply APPALLING. Perhaps try speaking to the manager/owner of the store about your problem and her response.

That sucks. Good luck.

I would not expect a platinum ring to bend with normal wear. Your husband may have gotten gypped by the person who sold it to him. Get the ring appraised ASAP and see if they can tell you whats in it and what its worth. I am not sure if the original jeweler would be liable after 5 years but still go to them with the findings of the appraiser. Check with your lawyer and see if you can sue them if it turns you were gypped.

i'd say you got had! i find it outrageous that your "jeweler" told you to put your ring away and not wear it! 100% platinum is the strongest, purest metal around. it definitely should not bend! platinum will however dull over time, so you should expect that it will lose its luster. also a pure platinum ring is substantially heavier than a gold band of the same size. something that you would be able to notice by holding it in your hand. sounds to me like your "jeweler" is going to try to sell you more of his crap jewelry. go give him hell!

It means you don't have a real platinum band. Platinum is harder and stronger than gold and more expensive. Get your money back as soon as possible and don't buy from this jeweler again. Trust me.

Sounds like you should go to another reputable jeweler and pay for a good evaluation- apprasial and estimate and if it turns out that you got ripped off, present the info to the original jeweler. ( make copies and keep all documentaion) If the jeweler doesnt cooperate...look into small claims court or bring it to a lawyer.

Platinum is so popular because it is stronger than gold or silver. It should NOT bend with normal wear and tear. Your fiance got jipped.

I would go get the ring appraised and see what they have to say. I can't beleive she told you to put it away and not wear it. That's the whole point of an engagement ring!
