I was there a couple of years ago, and the southern half of the canyon was being protected, with the result that a bunch of residents were to be relocated. Not sure if that ever happened, but I recall seeing a photo exhibit in Topanga itself of people and places affected. If that art gallery is still there, it's very cool with great art. There's also an interesting restaurant called the Inn of the Seventh Ray around there.

Its a street here in L.A. that connects the Westside/Hollywood with the San Fernando Valley. Its almost always congested around rush hour. There are lots of very expensive homes and cute little shops and theatres. People die all the time because its very curvy and they drive too fast. Wierdos like to hang around there and rape and murder people sometimes too.

I lived very near there a few times by the way.

Of course...from the lovely wikipedia.org ----

Topanga Canyon actually run from the ocean in Santa Monica through the Santa Monice Mountains to Woodland Hills in the San Fernando Valley. It is a beautiful drive. It is a "hippy community" with many "earthy people" as well as many very expensive homes.

There are some very good restaurants as well as the Will Greer Theatre. An outdoor theater that is great to go and see play and music at.

Funny you mention it! I just wen't there to a great little restaurant called Froggy's. You can sit outside on their deck surrounded by nature and have some cold beers and really fresh seafood. Low key and very cool.
I think because Topanga is kinda remote, it is more of an urban hippie area. It's a set of hills stuck between the valley side and the beach side.
You definitely get a local bohemian feel when you visit the few restaurants they have.
