And how many Canadian accents are there? All I know is that they say the word "sorry" in a way that makes me laugh histerically. Do Canadians think the way Americans say sorry is funny?

Generally, rural areas have different accents than cities. Newfoundland has the most distinct accent; it sounds a bit like Scottish or Irish to me. The rest of the east coast provinces have a twang that's less distinct.

Most Quebeckers speak French, obviously, and there are a range of french accents; some are very difficult to decipher if you speak some french.

Rural Ontario (south-west Ontario) has a distinct accent. To me, it sounds more high-strung (than my Toronto accent) -- "weee'll go fer a beer dere."

Western Canada (like from Ontario on) have basically the same accent which is similar to the American accent (but with certain influences from Britain). The Maritimes and Nfld have more Irish/British sounding accents. But generally speaking, most ppl from the more urban areas across Canada sound basically the same as Americans. You'll notice certain words pronounced differently, or different names for things (ie garbage instead of trash) but it doesn't sound that different until you analyse everything. Think of all the Canadian actors, Jim Carrey, Mike Myers etc. Have you ever noticed a major difference?

And no, we don't say "aboot"..... It's either aboat, or... well... something I can't really spell out LOL It's the Cape Breton way. I guess you'd have to hear it.

There is no 'Canadian' accent. We are a country that prides itself on its multiculturalism, so we all have accents that reflect where we live, or have come from. You'll find that people have accents that are influenced from everywhere.... my 5 year old speaks with a slight eastern accent that she's picked up from her babysitter.... but as my husband is originally from Germany - she's pretty gutteral about it. Throw in the fact she attends school in both of our official languages - you get the picture!

maybe the maritimes have an accent but truthfully I can't tell where in Canada anyone is from cuz we all sound the same. Having said that we are a very multicultural country so your 'canadian accent' may be indian, veitnamese, chinese, pilipino, iranian - you get the picture

ps it's only american's that think we say 'aboot' I have never said it in my life

I've heard that we have accents, for myself, I don't believe it...lol..really though, I'm in the west, there isn't much for accents here...in the east you have the newfie's, the french. a lot of ppl from the east have moved to the west. more money here, than there.
