First of all, I wouldn't. Windows XP is a hog. If you have 256 MB of RAM, then WIndows 2000 is OK, If you have 512MB of RAM, then Windows XP won't be so bad.
But if you MUST, then make good backups of everything. Look for your installation disks of all programs. When you are confident that you have everything, then REBOOT onto the Windows XP disk. When it gets to the point of installing Windows XP, simply pick the Windows folder to install it like an upgrade.
Good luck

Ouch! Not sure what to do now. A good techie might be able to find some of those files. Try calling the customer service number on the Windows XP documentation.
For future reference, do a backup of your files before you install a new OS.

ooops, although i believe a software can save all your files - now that you have reinstalled your OS - i think they're all gone and you cannot get them back anymore.
before you reinstalled your new OS.. you could have....
well.. for example you have a hard drive. if you partitioned your disk into 3 - say A, B and C and decided to install WinXP to A, then you could have transferred all your files to B and let it stay there to be protected. Once you have installed your WinXP completely, then you can transfer your files to another partition of the hard disk.

There was an option while installing if you wanted to reformat and install on a fresh system or just upgrade to XP. If you upgraded the files are still there, if you reformatted they are gone.

You could try recovering your files using a down-loadable program.
There are several, but here is one that I have used. It gives a free trial, and if you like what you see, you pay to finish the recovery.

When you say "my files" i presume you are referring to data files.
If this is the case the answer to your question is no.
However, if you are referring to program files you will to reinstall once you get WinXP up and running.
Good Luck.
