I know I'm not insomniac, but I have a hard time falling asleep when I need to. Like if I have school the next day, I have to go to sleep at 11 but at 10:30 I get a burst of energy and just want to do everything I need to do around the house. Then I just stay up and think awhile wishing I could get to sleep until like midnight or later....when I have to get up at 7. I guess I am what is called a night owl. But being tired at school the next day and falling asleep during class isn't exactly a good thing. Does anyone have any tips on what I can do so I can fall asleep a little faster and relax? Thanks!

Stop thinking about the next day. Take a deep breath and clear your mind. You could think about something soothing like lying on the shore of a tropical island. Or think of something monotonous like, times tables.

I have had the same exact problem all my life. It really can interfere with your life. This is what I do, but may not be a healthy decision. I take an over the counter sleep aid at night and it puts me right to sleep. If you are going to use them often do not use the Tylenol brand. Tylenol taken often can and will elevate your liver enzyme levels. Benedryl is a safe option and is the same exact thing that is in the Tylenol pm. Check the back of all the sleep aids, the ingredient in Benedryl is the same thing in all the sleep aids. If you don't use the Benedryl use one made just for a sleep out without the pain reliever in it. Good luck, you don't have to many options. Are you staying away from caffeine at night?

create a routine and stick to it.
i read about this in one of our health magazines at work-it's worth a shot...before bed-write down all the things that need to be done the next day or things that have been stressing you out-by creating a "to do"list-it will help your mind not to think about these things when going to sleep
also once in bed-stay there-even if you can't sleep. this will help the body relax, slowing down the heart and breathing rates and will eventually help you fall asleep-if you get up again-you increase these things and it will take longer to relax once back in bed.
try drinking a glass of warm milk and taking a warm shower right before bed.you might also try get one of those nature sounds alarm clocks or radios. i work night shift in trauma icu at a hospital and have no trouble going to bed once i'm home in the morning but on occasion have trouble sleeping and these things have always helped me.my nature sounds radio is great-i love the ocean waves and night crickets chirping sounds the best-look for one with a timer on it so it will shut itself off-walgreens has some that are pretty inexpensive and so does walmart.
if you're really desperate-you can try benadryl-it's non-habit forming and will not hurt your body. i've taken it before when i can't sleep and i always feel better the next day. take two 25mg tablets every 6 hours.

There could be alot of reasons why you are having trouble falling asleep. Are you anxious or nervous about something? Do you watch TV right before bedtime? Ironically, the fact that you are worried about falling asleep can also make you anxious which will keep you awake. If you can't fall asleep, try going to another room and reading a book. Sometimes listening to music makes me really sleepy, but it should be something nice and mellow. I have also read that exercising can help, but it needs to be a few hours before bedtime or that could keep you awake as well. There are alot of sources online you can refer to. You may want to try an OTC sleep aid if nothing else works.

Your doctor will not give you Klonopin as one person suggest. That drug is a psychotropic drug. I use that in the care of my elderly patients. I have the same problem you do. finally my doctor put me on Lunesta. It is not habit forming, It is all natural and it works wonderful. I don't take them every night, just the nights I really have a difficult time. Try it, If you don't like them just get rid of them. Benedryl is totally useless in my eyes.
May work for some, but not me.

I am the same way - so I just try to listen to my body and do what come natural. Maybe go to your doctor and ask for some ambien or sonata. They are pretty good at helping fall asleep without drowsiness.

I am the EXACT same way. I take Klonopin to quiet my mind and/or melatonin and valerian root (last two are herbal). I also meditate. It has helped so far.
Klonopin is not a common presciption for sleep. It is generally prescribed for anxiety. What is does is increase the GABA in your brain, which makes you less sensitive to stimuli. So your brain is processing less of what is going on around you. Like I said, it "quiets" my brain and lets me sleep.

Seems as though your body is out of wack. It dosen't know when to sleep and when to be awake. Maybe talk to your doctor about a mild sleep aid to help your body get on a schedule.
