Well, I was a kid in the 1960's. There were lots of kids in my neighborhood so we played in large groups quite a bit - you don't see that as much today. We had big games of hide and seek, tag and capture the flag. There was a big hill across the street that had the remnants of an old estate ( I lived in Germany). We called that area the "Alamo" and had lots of adventures there, including a rope tied to a tree so you could swing off a bluff about 15 feet high. In the winter we had a big area with 2 nice slopes of sledding and we stayed out until our mittens and socks were soaked and freezing - then we went home to warm up, dry out, and go again.
My best friend, Clifford, and I climbed trees a lot. We had our "airplane" tree with 2 cockpits - I always had to be the co-pilot of course. When the enemy shot at us we would bail out and land on a little hill that we could roll down. Being a girl, I was only allowed by my mother to climb up to the 3rd main branch.
In the attic of our apt. building, Clifford and I built a ship out of boxes and sailed to imaginary places. Again, I was never the captain and my bunk was in the small box.
Clifford lived on the 2nd floor so we played spy on his balcony which usually ended in him locking me outside on it.
We played marbles, rode bikes, played fuseball, and we like jumping out of the swings at the playground.
I loved being a kid. It was fun.

Outings every other day to parks, beachs, walks, city centre etc. This keeps their mind active and is good excercise that doesn't cost much. Scrap booking with old magazines, sand pit, Buy a packet of seeds and put them in a glass jar with Cotton wool and water and watch them grow over the vacation period. Get some clothes pegs and some bed linen and let them make a cubby house over a table or chairs and they can take their teddy's and toy in there.

I played house alot with my cousins
I had a bunch of woods behind my house and we would spend hours at a time in them. there was a fallen tree and we would climb it, cause it was half broken, and there was a farmer that had black berries growing at the edge of the woods and we would sit and eat them all day.
I never had a bb gun but i did have a toy riffle that popped real loud
we played fort
i had a swing set behind my house with a fort and slide on it, it was great
i hung out with a lot of neighborhood kids, and it was all the time we were getting in trouble, but nothing too bad. we would just always loose track of time and such playing and wasting the day.

The lack of responsibilty was enough. Oh yea, being young, naive and believing the world was your oyster was also great. Who needs activities?

My brother and I built forts in our oleander bushes, went cane pole fishing at the bay, rode our bikes everywhere to places our parents were never aware of, roller skated, and spent many hours at our friends house watching their cable tv. Indoor fights consisted of rubberbands, and spitball fights.
