Most important is good water. More than 99% of a cup of coffee is water. It doesn't matter what else you do, or what beans you use, if the water is poor, the coffee will be as well.
Having a grinder does help a lot-- when coffee is ground you break up the bean and release the oils. If your coffee is pre-ground when you buy it a lot of these oils are lost and the coffee quickly becomes stale. These oils are what gives the coffee its flavor. If you can not afford a grinder, make sure you keep your coffee in an airtight container-- like Tupperware. Also its better to keep it at room temp rather than the freezer or fridge since moisture can get drawn into the beans and grounds and make it staler quicker.
Also grind the coffee to the right consistency-- if you are using a french press (my favorite), the coarser the better. Espresso should be ground to a powder. Most automatic coffee machines are a medium grind.
Finally the other factor is the roasting of the coffee. Roasting extracts the oils from the raw bean. Dark roasts will taste a little smokey (since the beans are literally overcooked and BURNED, thank you Starbucks!). Lightly roasted will taste more bitter since you will have more of the bean taste and less of the coffee taste. A small local roaster is often the best and will roast each variety of bean to its own peak characteristics. Coffee should ideally be consumed within 2 weeks after roasting (and after 24 hours from roasting as well).

so many things to keep in mind
1) good water. If you don't have a filtration system, consider getting bottled water or water deliver
2) clean brew machine (assuming you use a drip coffee maker). Supermarkets sell coffee machine cleaners that you run through your machine once or twice--it makes a huge difference, because old deposits can build up on your machine and ruin the taste of it.
3) talk to someone who knows beans. You may like a dark or medium roast, and not even know it. My personal favs are french roasts, jamaican blue mountain, and a coffee from Puerto Rico called Alto Grande (The vatican imports this coffee, and only this coffee). When you buy ground coffee, consider getting it ground more--the more coarse the coffee grounds, the weaker the coffee will be that you brew. Finer grounds make coffee with more body (but you don't want it as fine as a powder). No matter whether you like dark medium or light roasts, a finer ground will make a more "full" cup of coffee--usually.
4) consider getting a french press--they're pretty inexpensive at commerical retailers like target etc., versus buying them at coffee shops (which can be expensive). A french press will make a good cup of coffee, because it doesn't wash away the natural oils from the coffee like drips will.
5) if you use cream and sugar, consider using raw/natural sugar and the freshest dairy cream you can find. Good sugar will enhance the taste, rather than overpower it, as will good cream.
6) as someone else mentioned, play around with the strength of your coffee. Don't be afraid to try a very strong cup and a weak cup. You will gradually find the right taste for you.

If that is evening time you will in all probability additionally be provided wine. you will maximum somewhat be provided nibbles in the event that they have any approximately, in spite of time of day. The character characteristics that make one a unfavourable Host/Hostess are not somewhat even non secular ones. they are only "cluelessness" and "undesirable manners" in spite of the indisputable fact that i assume some human beings do it only to be rid of trip makers greater straight away. i be conscious of I constantly bypass away a place in the previous i think as though i will faint from starvation or my caffeine ranges drop dangerously low. i do no longer plenty fancy waking up on somebody's carpet till we've been out eating the evening in the previous and a team human beings crashed available for protection motives. Even then - i'm too previous for that crap now. I only call a cab and bypass living house and make my own rattling coffee.

Water.
You need a quality water to begin with.
Second, put in the right amount of coffee for a good ratio.
I know a guy who would fill the filter to the top an put in six cups of water.
I was eating coffee.
Third, brew it at a strength that you enjoy.

Sorry about the grinder -- it does help, and they are not expensive. Barring that, try the two links below. The first is a simple step-by-step of instructions by eHow.com and the second a couple of tips by users. Good luck and good drinking!
