What do you mean by why? He was not the sole inventor...the idea of computer like device had been there for quite sometime and he improved on that idea, as did subsequent inventors...
As for why, I guess he must have got a kick out of it, of not wasting his time and doing something useful or his Mama would have been angry at him for being a good-for-nothing-fellow and this invention was his answer to her bickering's...as to why, well you can ask him if he someday happens to cross ur path...:-))

he had invented computer for future generation to do work with more speed and latest technology

it was PASCAL 4 the 1st time who got the idea bcoz he wanted to solve his worried papa's probs . he passed his ideas into the air & the FLU caught charles babbage .he solved the probs & as a result that solution emerged in the form of something called computer
