Matter of fact it continued to go on until I graduated from High School. I will tell you this, the kids were respectful to their teachers, they listened, they learned. Kids did not talk back to the teacher or disrupt the class. It was not tolerated nor did the parents tolerate that type of behavior. Sure there were those kids who got a wild hair and they were promptly taken out the class and got licks (which was the paddle) came back in the room sat down and there was no more trouble. You did not have all these mass quanities of kids with ADHD and kids out of control and gangs and violence it just was not tolerated. Kids knew this. Kids thought, trust me, long and hard about the outcome of their behavior. When I was in highschool the principal would tell you, you can get the paddle or you can be suspended 3 days from school. Most kids took the paddle because they did not want to miss 3 days of school and all the make up work. Also when there were fights the principal would get whomever was fighting and put boxing gloves on them and let them box it out. He did not play that gang stuff at all. It was one on one. There just was not the problems then that we have today in schools, many things were just not tolerated. Now you have parents who are as bad as the kids, they curse, got attitude, no respect. We are losing so many teachers yearly because of these out of control kids/parents and because all the pressure put on teachers for kids to learn who have no one at home to re-enforce home-work etc... It's sad. Also, when I was in school kids with problems who were mentally challenged or with handicaps were not put in classes with other kids, which everyone now will tell you that is so wrong, but I don't think it was wrong. I think it's unfair for a special needs child to be put into a class with non-needs it's just not a good thing.

Yes. Until 2nd grade they could just do it as long as anothe teacher watched. After that it could only be done by the principal and with 24 hrs notice to the parents.
It was really stressfull . I never got in trouble but when other kids did I got sick to my stomach and cried , as did a lot of other little kids . As for the 24 hour thing that just seemed like cruel and unusual punishment. They knew in 24 hours that they were going to get paddled in the principals office in front of the teacher and their parents for something they did wrong regardless of their behavior after that. So if they talked in class but were good the rest of the day the decision was already made. Seems like emotional torture to me.

Nope....sure didn't.....but (and this is odd) but when I was in grade school there was this kid that use to act up ALL the time in class...he had real behavioral problems.

So the parents signed a "waiver" that said our teacher was aloud to discipline the child by paddling. He only got the paddle like maybe 2 times and that set him straight. He didn't act up in class anymore or was a disturbance.

I don't think they hit him hard or anything...but I think he stopped acting because of the humiliation of it. We all made fun of him at recess for getting paddled.

I did in grade school. Let me tell you that there were less problems with kids than there are today. The kids actually had enough fear in them to behave and concentrate on their work. They knew that if they had a run in with the teacher, that all that teacher would have to do is send them to the principals office. That was a big deal. I never had to be spanked at school, just the thought of it kept me straight. Today the kids get away with way too much if you ask me. There's no respect for the teachers, yet they are supposed to respect their students...and they've got to watch what they say for fear of being chewed out by some parent who thinks its just the teachers job to raise and rear their out of control child. It's nuts, I don't remember a time when my mother did not back my teacher. I do the same for my childs teachers because I realize that they do have a tough job and it hurts them and the other children in the class when they have an unruly child causing interruptions daily. I've told my daughter numerous times that when that teacher is up there teaching the class her mouth is to be shut and her ears are to be open. They may not be able to spank the kids in school anymore, but she knows if I get a bad report from one of her teachers that she will have a nice tanning when she gets home. There's just no excuse for it!

Yes, in the 70's. They brought you up to the front of the class and paddled you in front of everyone. I got it every friday for a messy desk, didn't help my organizational skills one bit. Got it once for telling another student that they had spelled a word wrong. (They called it cheating) -That one just confused me since it was not in spelling class and was during free work time. etc... All the paddling and public humiliation punishment ever did for me was make me embarrassed and lowered my self confidence. I am very glad that it is illegal now.

Yes I did. I got paddled in Kindergarten, which is a little much for a small child to handle. I never talked during nap time again, but I didn't really behave afterward. I guess I was just too small for it to have had a big impact on me.

Yes, and parents paddled me too. Well worth every whack, made me into a better person. Time- outs don't work... thats what is wrong with kids these days.

Yes.....both the elementary school and the junior high school I attended used corporal punishment. It sure worked as a deterrent for me! Of course, this was back in the 1970's.
