The basic refrigeration cycle works in a refrigerator by removing heat from the storage compartment. The compressor pumps hot gas(freon) into the condenser where it is air cooled (the radiator thingy on the back of the cabinet). As the gas is cooled, it condenses into a liquid and fed into an expansion valve or capillary tube restriction. When the high pressure liquid expands into the evaporator (lining the freezer compartment), it has a sudden drop in pressure and temperature. Heat from the storage compartment flows into the freon, which is returned to the compressor as a low pressure gas, where it starts the cycle all over again. All air conditioners, refrigerators and freezers work on this principle of heat transfer.

Ok, it takes a refrigerant and compresses it. When it turns into a liquid it becomes hotter, and it runs this through the cooling tubes on the back of the refrigerator. Then it sends it through a valve where there is less pressure (on the inside of the refrigerator), this cold refrigerant cools your refrigerator. Basically the principle is that when a gas becomes liquid it releases "energy of transition" and to become a gas again it must collect "energy of transition."
