I mean, can they really tell one person from another? Do they remember people, or are we all just big bags of food to them?

I don't mean that they want to eat us, only that they only see us as things that give them food.

They are very smart and very social, beside of having a highly developed sense of smell: they can recognize people by their scent (plus hundreds of other chemicals) and that's why they are so important in different rescue teams, anti-bomb squads, narcotic search in airports, etc. They can detect sugar blood levels in diabetic patients and some people believe they can even detect cancer, all with their mighty nose and a lot of training.
Not all dog breeds are equally trainable though, different breeds were created for different purposes and some perform better than others at different tasks.

Yes, dogs are very smart. They know people by how they smell. Dogs use their sense of smell for everything. That's why when you approach a dog, he always will smell you, he's making a mental note of your scent, and if you see him again, he'll match you to the smell he remembers.

dogs are really smart, and they tell the difference in people by how they smell, thats why when you go around a new dog they smell you up, they are trying to figure out if they know you........ if they thought everyone was food, they would bite everyone, which they dont

I think the same thing sometimes, I wonder if they lick us because we taste good to them? Our skin releases sweat which is salty, and could probably taste good to a dog. But I think they know different people because my dogs are scared of people they don't know, but jump all over me when I come home.
