1. Chattanooga - there are some things you can do up there, such as take a train ride from one side of town to the other; go to Rock City for the view, and ride an incline train up the side of Lookout Mountain to get more views. There are also things to do downtown (the TN Aquarium, restaurants, and the Chattanooga Lookouts - AA affiliate of the Reds- if you're into baseball). A very doable drive.
2. Savannah - the downtown area is very nice to look at. There are tours around the city, for haunted houses (since some of them are very old), and Tybee Island isn't too far away (~20 miles or so on US 80). The minus with Tybee is that if you are going on a weekend, you'll probably encounter other people who are there for the weekend as well, and the beach may be crowded. The Sand Gnats (Low A ball for the Nationals) play in Savannah. This one I'd actually give more thought to doing over several days, depending on how much time you want to spend in a car, because you'll probably spend 4 hours or more going each way.

Come on everyone runs to the River Boat and get your gamble on. It is like Las Vegas is to Los Angeles, near enough to get to, but far away to feel like a decent weekend away from home. It is very affordable.

If you are looking for a beach, Myrtle Beach, SC is a great place to go. Another great place is Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. There are lots of things to do at both places for all ages.

Isn't Lake Lanier (sp) close to you? We stayed at Pine Isle resort years ago and it was pretty fun. Probably too close for you, though, it seems like it was just outside Atlanta.
